Fish market kept crabs in toilet cubicle

A Sydney fish market that stored live crabs in a toilet cubicle has become the latest business added to the New South Wales Government's name and shame list.

The Primary Industries Minister Ian Macdonald says it is one of the most outrageous cases of food storage he has heard about.

The business on Liverpool road at Ashfield in the city's inner west received two fines worth $660.

Another 24 businesses were added to the Food Authority's website today.

Aside from the fish market, a Chinese restaurant in Randwick that had a dead rat in its storage area is listed. It was fined nearly $2,000.

While an eatery in Starkey street, Forestville got three fines worth $1,980 for having containers of raw foods encrusted with food waste and cockroaches.

The Food Authority says it has issued 1,000 fines the past 12 months against 594 businesses.

an Indian restraunt we went to in Phuket - the squat toilet adjoined the kitchen with a curtain for privacy - bloody good onion bhargies though.

Similar experience in Thailand ....

Tue, 2009-05-19 17:05

Had a bad case of dysentery (caught it in Nepal) that hit home while in Chang Mai, Thailand.  It came on with little warning while out shopping and I ended up diving into a typical roadside restaurant, desperate to borrow the dunny.  No customers thankfully, but the young girl behind the counter could not speak English.  But pointing to my stomach and bum and making groaning noises got the point across.  I was shown into the kitchen, with the squat toilet in the corner - three walls, the fourth was a curtain, and the walls didn't go up to ceiling, they were just above head height.  Grandma was preparing food about 2m away as my stomach did its best to empty my entire gut, intestines and all, into the local sewerage system.  Here's me, embarrased that Grandma had to listen to me literally exploding, but she just got steadily on with her chopping.  Once I had thrown some water around (no bog roll outside of hotels in Asia!) and washed my legs down (squat toilets and dysentery don't go together well), I waved to Grandma on the way out, decided not to buy any takeaway from that particular restaurant, and hurried back to the backpackers to spend the next few days permanently parked on the toilet.

I have eaten in some very dodgy places while travelling extensively in Asia, but having the dunny - especially a squat one - in the kitchen seems like asking for trouble!
