Fish trawlers

We have been fishing around the capes (southwest) of the state for the last week or so on and off when we can. Have been lucky and getting on to some nice size Dhuies, we have come across some schools of dhu which must be coming on to sporn. Headed out today and nearly fell over board when I spotted a massive fish trawler working these grounds and it is not far off the coast. Why do the fisheries department allow this ? These trawlers will smash the Dhuies when they are sporning and tear up habitat etc. I can not believe it and fisheries department are off their heads if they think they are doing the right thing in regards to management of Dhufish. Sure we catch a feed but dont go around wiping out schools of fish. Fish trawlers are not healthy for fish stocks.

Trawlers

Sat, 2012-01-28 21:42

Tell us more because from my understanding fish trawlers are not allowed inside of the 200 metre line.

It could have been a wetliner or shark net boat and they are licenced to work that area at this time of the year.

Puerulus

Sat, 2012-01-28 22:13

They also do the catching of puerulus so they can get a semi??? accurate prediction for up coming crayfish seasons from it as well. Its like a floating laboratory with as many as 14-15 people on board at any time depending on what research they are doing at the time.

Naturaliste

Sat, 2012-01-28 22:03

If its the fisheries trawler, its name is the Naturaliste, and its equipped to carry out not only trawling but long lining, crayfishing, scalloping and many other activities.

As Clint described it, blue hull and white super structure and trawl towers and booms

Research

Sat, 2012-01-28 22:13

Yep, sounds like the fisheries research boat to me. Been out on it a few times and looks like a pro trawler, the writing on the side is hard to see unless your close or know the boat.

oh no

Sun, 2012-01-29 00:32

Its a commercial fisherman, probably with asians aboard, double dipping on his whale and dolphin quotawhile carrying some Forrest Alliance activists in custody.

Lets kick his bucket over.

I bet he's gonna use the right hand ramp to DRIVE ON his trailer as well.

Im not sure how to slot a raghead (NDI) in there as well but seriously, from memory the FV Naturaliste has "Fisheries Research" in large letters along the sides.

Best  bet would be to ring fisheries and find out who is allowed to trawl there (note-stabilizers are not trawl gear) before posting up here.

NDI=no disrepect intended

Hang on Bobby H!

Sun, 2012-01-29 01:03

You forgot it was Julia's inaction that caused it, there would have been another 3.5 metre GW shark swimming around somewhere nearby and due to 'some' current somewhere and 'that' tropospherical wind shear, there will be a Cat 6 cyclone there next week. I hope he didnt ping your spot!

fisheries

Sun, 2012-01-29 04:00

sounds like the naturaliste! they cover a lot of ground and anyway boys all fishing vessels now must have and i mean MUST HAVE a VMS! fitted to the vessel! you cant take a shit on a fishing vessel now without fisheries knowing about it! If it is not fisheries out there then blow it up cos fish trawling nets should have been banned years ago! go to the east coast and have a look at what has happened to their fish stocks! when i tried to explain to a syd fish trawl skipper how we wetline on the west coast he just told me nah mate we just take the whole school! the cowboys have gota go! Good Day!

Depth

Sun, 2012-01-29 08:34

Up there the fish trawlers and trap boats have a 100 metre limit before they are allowed to set their gear. The usual measure of distance east of Barrow island is 1 x metre of depth = 1 nautical mile which puts them well out of reach of any amateur and charter boat.

na not correct

Mon, 2012-01-30 20:00

the NW trawl fishery, very roughly is a trapezoid????? shape (rectangle a bit skew wiff) and is bordered by a line north south of around Rankin Bank and across to 120 deg (about Port Hedland) and the northern edge is roughly the 100 meter line, southern edge is around the 50 meter contour. From memory its divided into 4 blocks and they have equal time in each.

North Rankin A is outside the 100 line and only the trap and dropline boats can work there.

Have dealt with them quite a bit both while fishing up here and doing rig standby, plus a good mate has a couple of trap boats here.

Carnarvonite I think you may be referring to Commonwealth trawl, I think these are State. Lombardos had several, not sure if they still own them though.

120 Line

Mon, 2012-01-30 20:56

When I fished up there our licence was from the 114 line off Exmouth to the 120 off towards Broome/ Hedland, we mostly followed the 50-60 metre contour depending on the tides etc, never saw a fish trawler or trap boat working in over 5 years.

The trap boat crews that we knew said they couldn't come inside something like 70nm offshore, though we found a couple of traps right on top of Glomar shoal, not sure whether they were legal or illegal.

Kailis has a couple working from Exmouth doing 10-12 day trips, where they work now is a mystery to me.

Apparently the MV Naturalist is in Perth atm.  The schedule bit at the bottom shows 2006 info, but the map says its in Perth with todays date.

Cheers for the feedback guys,

Cheers for the feedback guys, I jumped the gun a bit but thought the worst. I did report it to the fisheries and they didnt know they (Naturaliste) were around but did conferm the boat could be in the area sampling. He also stated that trawlers could work the area if they wanted but it wouldnt be viable and new laws soon would not allow it. Cheers.

Vessel Tracking website

Sun, 2012-01-29 10:02

Check out www.marinetraffic.com and it shows the current position of the RV Naturalist as of 20 mins ago still down there. You can also then google the vessel to find out what it is and what it's doing.

As the guys have said it is a research vessel so all good, but a good site to check these things out, even better if you have a radar and can pick up the AIS number for the vessel.
