fisheries funds
Submitted by Faulkner Family on Tue, 2008-10-28 19:15
while talking to a tackle shop owner today the subject of fisheries came up(as it usually does at the moment)and the post of adams jogged my memory,if fisheries were to charge $50 for an anual licence to help fund the fisheries officers pay (the ones that nab you if you do something wrong),would you pay ,refuse or just run the gauntlet and hope not to get caught.
i personally wouldnt mind if it was going to pay wages for more officers
what are your thaughts?

Pay
I would Pay for a license of some kind assuming the funds went into the actual policing of the guidelines.

50% for RSB, 50% for research, no use having compliance if your not sure what the sizes and limits should be!

Agree there
G'day guys
Yep I would definately pay the licence but, and thats a big BUT, how on earth it could be policed. As an estimate how many Fisheries "Police" would be needed to not only check catches but check licences? There's a lot of water out there and most fishing is done early morning or late arvo / evening resulting in penalty rates etc. Definately money to research as Adam stated. I seem to remember the figure of 600 000 west aussies fish so if we assume half pay the licence thats say $15 mill, half to research leaves $7.5 mill, would that buy enough equipment ( cars, boats, office space, admin staff, etc ) and officers to warrant the fee. I'd put my hand up for sure.
Cheers Mick

Fines
If you don't have a license then the fines that are collected go back into the trust fund. *Ends pipe dream there. LoL.

Agreed with Ads
I'd DEFINATELY pay it if it meant solid impartial research (seems pipe dreams are contagious!) and totally agree with Adam there as said on research and enforcement. But I also agree Mick on the HUGE enforcement effort and resources required.

Yep' I'd definately pay, but all the dough should go to the officers, those research blokes get paid heaps already hehe (whoops ducks the stubby that comes flying from the Exxie corner). Seriously though, if the money was spent on wages for the DOF Officers, Researchers or actual research and devlopement projects for the betterment of rec angling I'd be happy to pay, $15m would buy a Shite load of Officers and Reseachers at the current pay rate.

Would pay as long as the money was guaranteed to the purpose and just not part of government general funding.
Would also support a system where your boat is licensed for "fishing" or "other" use. If used for fishing you pay an extra $50 which is again guaranteed to go to fisheries research and compliance. If boat is licensed as "other" and is found to have any form of fishing gear on board, an immediate fine.
By doing as part of boat registration, no need to set up seperate department to collect and administer and therefore the money being used for what it is mean't for. Could also tie in the the fishing license with a catch log book system to help obtain more accurate catch figures from the rec sector.
