Fishing advice for a newbie

 Hi guys,

just recently got a boat and I am seeking some advice to get hooked up on some big ones,

headed out to Gemini wreck yesterday arvo and drifted the area, had no luck jigging so changed to bait and hooked up a few wrasse

I'm not asking for any spots (pm me if your willing to share some haha), just some advice as to where to head , what depth to fish, chasing some pinkies or dhuies but I'd be happy to catch a sambo atm just for some fun

cheers guys,

You running a sounder and GPS unit ? Read up and study these two as much as you can, that's the best advice I can give.

Don't have anything handy but I'm sure there's some reef system there, besides sun up or sundown you want to check minor major bite times, drop anchor and spill the burley.

Not sure how many of these are up Mindarie way but it might assist.

Tides, bite times and wind these are the go for me.

Fri, 2016-04-15 07:44

I'm in the same situation as you having bought a boat last September and it was all new as aside from dinghy fishing for bread and butters I'd only been out once before in a mate's boat. Now I'm hooked!

My boat came with a Humminbird 788 and a 798. I've put the transducer and one of the brackets on the dinghy and installed a Furuno 627 and P66 on the boat and use the 798 as a dedicated plotter and hooked them both up to an external GPS puck. Best thing I've done to the boat so far and I've done a fair bit.

My other piece of advice would be to treat an experienced boatie to at least a day out on the water. I got a mate who has a good 15 years experience and it's the little things like reading the sounder and searching around once you find a small lump (as you could have just picked up the edge of a gold mine), setting a drift and positioning to anchor that can be the difference between catching and going home empty handed.

At the end it can all just come down to good luck. Hard ground is what you need to find for a start and any basic structure is a bonus. Metro is always going to be hard work so I would be heading out to at least 50-60m if you are after Dhuies or out around Rotto north or south in a line with the island. Big drifts to cover ground, big baits and a lot of patience. Good luck with it all and hope you post some pics if you do get into em.

Cheers for the advice guys, I've been thinking about putting in another sounder as I'm always flicking through screens and it gets quite annoying

And when your in 40-50metres of water is it worth burleying up ? I doubt fish would come to the surface

yeah can't wait to get hooked up and will post photos for sure

if the weather is good and allows you to the pick at that depth, for sure send a bomb down. I usually do this in the 20-25m mark about a km behind the reef where I fish. Will bring the Sambos and Pinkies on for sure.

Get into your local tackle

Fri, 2016-04-15 09:40

Get into your local tackle store, sponsors on right hand side of screen would give best advise, pick up a burley bucket and rope, yes you can anchor and burley the bottom in 50m if you wish.

Other wise you can drift and fish the bottom using a drift anchor, ask about these also.

I will say the opposite to

Fri, 2016-04-15 10:59

I will say the opposite to some others haha. Start shallow, 3 mile or ffb. Learn what your sounder is reading around there. Hard work heading out 40m+ if you dont know what your sounder is reading or if it is even set up right. I caught 95% of my snapper and dhufish in water less than 16m on ffb and closer, plenty of fish in close and shallow, most people just drive straight over them

Yeah agree with that and it

Fri, 2016-04-15 13:25

Yeah agree with that and it is the approach I've taken. As you are learning to read a sounder the 3 Mile will have heaps to look at and if it's a really clear day and shallow enough inside the reef you can actually see what's down there with your eyes. Once you head out finding ground becomes a lot harder and you start second guessing yourself.

Not sure where you launch from but the area around the Hillarys southern cardinal marker has lots of lumps and bumps to look at. We even pulled out a 55cm Dhu, some cracking sambos, a Black Arse and a horse of a KGW on my first trip and second trip out there on jigs and bait.

Navionics web app

Fri, 2016-04-15 13:51

Download the Navionics web app to your iphone or computer (its free). look at lumps and fish the contours. Finding your own spots is half the fun. Don't tell anyone when you find a good lump and pull up a couple of big dhuies. Good luck.

Good book

Fri, 2016-04-15 20:52

If you haven't already read it, or got a copy of it get the John Adams book "How to use an Echo Sounder/fish Finder"

It will be the best money you ever spent, read it then take it out on the water and look at your screen and look at all the illustrations in the book. You are not going to get the same picture but when you get some thing on your screen that is close to an illustration then you can say you are pretty much on the same sort of bottom.

As has been said above start in shallow water first.
