I used to sometime go out alone, but  a freind of mine died a couple of years ago when he fell overboard whilst out on own. will never know how it happened.

If you have some medical issue out there who will assist you ie heart attack.

If you do insist on going out alone I would make sure you log on with the sea rescue so if something does happen and you are not back when advised we can start looking for you.

Last thing we need to have a family member report you overdue and have no idea where you went.

more often than not! you just need to be carefull and know what you would do if sh#t did hit the fan! i really enjoy fishing solo as there is no stress you do what you want and if you dont have someone there on the off days asking where all the fish are!

 I Often fish on my own, which i enjoy as you stated you can do your own thing with plenty of room on the deck- but it`s always good to have a mate there as well, i only fish with close mates on my boat so i`ve never had problem,

If the weather is good im out there solo or not dosen`t worry me.- Pain in the arse to get a good photo solo!!!!!!!

Think it has a lot to do with the size of the boats these guys are taking out Share the fuel costs which is fair enough!!!

Whilst I really enjoy fishing with mates I actually fish better and catch many more fish when alone - as skipper when you have others on board you have a tendency to compromise your thinking to seek to please the people with you  (When alone I often like to drift a little further / explore new ground / try different techniques).

I do miss the companionship and true enjoyment of putting others onto fish but fishing alone has it's moments - NB   I always log on with sea rescue with  the location of the area I am fishing, est time of return etc and log off on return  

I never fish alone, seen too many things happen while working at sea and don''t think the risk is worth it.

Once was on a mates boat and the anchor rope had chaffed nearly through and snapped while he was pulling it, he fell back and cracked his head , out cold for 5-6 minutes, could easily have gone over the side and would have been history .

My thought are that if you are alone you may take greater risks than you normally would if there was someone with you

have taken to wearing a small backpack with epirb, flares and wetsuit in when i do

i figure it might seem silly until you find yourself floating.  then you'd be pretty glad you wore it.

Never fished alone , would like to attempt it but always thought it would be un safe with the miles i  travel. I do get what you mean by stress free, you can do what you want..... i struggle finding deckies

I fish alone a bit. i find it is a good time to look for new ground, as there is no pressure to put your decky onto fish.

Obviously take extra care when on your own.

I fish solo sometimes, people you take out can do your head in at times. Although I am a competent swimmer I wear a life jacket when solo. My biggest fear is knocking my head and falling overboard

I always fish with a deckie, never had trouble getting deckies, mainly limit to several guys who all like similar things fishing wise (Ie: no bait).

I like the banter with someone else, and not too keen on the safety side alone but certainly get why sOme fish alone v

Two is best on a boat, regardless of size, but normally fish 3 to improve the social aspect.

i sold my jet ski and got a boat because i found fishing alone boring, going out with mates n talking sh!t is half the fun

I wouldn't go fishing by myself...

I'm a girl... need help sometimes to haul my fish in... would SO hate to lose a whopper just because I couldn't lift it on board!!! LOL...

I think of fishing as a sociable thing to do, and take friends out for the pleasure of their company, doing what we love to do! Catch fish, that is!

 i always fish alone ive only got a small boat & no one likes going that far out in it but it works for me & if something did happen well if your times up your times up im not going to stop having fun because a 1 in a million thing might happen  

But then I have the safety of the Dampier Islands. Never go beyond them. Stay in Mobile range. I dont play music on the boat and the peace it offers with just you and your thought can be great. But when I do I am very close to an Island, and then target sportsfish rather than demersal.

Not safe at all venturing out into the big blue alone. Getting on in years and cant risk the sudden things that may happen out there alone. Much prefer to go out with the Mrs. At least that way I can get a bit of mouth to mouth if needed.

Just on that subject I have fished with the same two deckies for over 20 years and we still have great fun good to have real mates

i went out once by myself caught my first dhuey by myself and celebrated it by myself because i had no one to brag too or give the sh^&s to because i caught a bigger fish. lessoned learned.....always take a mate out even if only to brag about your catch!

seriously though....safety first...

some interesting responses guys, i fish out to the derwent alone in a 519 stacer on a regular basis, never had a problem, i can find deckies but more often than not its like im running a charter at a loss as no one has any idea about pulling anchors, storing gear, rigging up putting in for fuel, its just easier to go alone these days. i guess something could happen one day but to be honest it never crosses my mind, sometimes when you put something in your head your more prone to it happening, lucky i went out today with an empty noggin as usual and scored a pb metro dolly as well as 2 firsts a stripey tuna and aother yet to be identified tuna, thinking sbt. was also funny to see a 50ft cabin cruiser (i would be thinking in the 750k range) trolling 37kg gear past the fad only to do such a tight turn he dragged his pink soft oscer right across my bow and dragged me for 10 meters, lucky i was hooked up to a dolly otherwise the snips would have had me a new richter, going to write a small report later but im really starting to think the bigger the boat some people own the smaller their brains are ;P

About 1 in 3 fishing trips are solo efforts...usually because my regular fishing buddies are either working or had better offers on that day.

I enjoy being by myself in the boat and if the weather is nice, I'd rather be in the boat than looking at it parked in the carport. I always log on on log off with Mandurah water rescue (or whoever the local rescue group is).

I caught my first dhuie on a solo trip, and I'm heading out tomorrow by myself because of those reasons stated above.

For me, I'm probably more careful when I'm going solo....especially with the weather, etc. If is starts to look iffy, I start heading in, even if there's nothing in the esky but fish all over the sounder....there's always tomorrow!

 half the fun is dribbling shit and seeing who does better on the day!

i have fished the swan alot on my own in the tinny and find myself coming home way before i would with a mate onboard.

good fishing is great... even better with ya mate!!!

Righteo i know what ya mean about deckies with no idea...... might aswell go solo anyway.....less work sometimes!!

deckies with no idea kinda sucks, but when your fishing with some one who knows what they're doing and can catch fish its always good

make a little comp out of it, cant do much bragging when your by urself fishing with 2 people is better but 3 isn't that bad

I've only got a small boat so I find it easier on my own anyway..... Just launching can be a hassle when the ramp is busy...
