Fishing in Amsterdam

Just got back from a few weeks in London / Europe, while I was over there I teed up a day of fishing with one of Amsterdam's guides and got a taste for the freshwater fishing over there.

We mainly caught Zander which are similar to the Yankee Walleye but apparently fight a lot harder and a couple of Perch (our Redfin).  There was the chance of a big Pike but we didn't try for them, the fishing was good enough not to worry about it.

Anway here are a few pics of the trip, the better ones should be in an article sometime soon with a summary of how the trip went, so I can't put up the good stuff.

My first Zander, got him on a softie of some sort

Some of the kit, can't remember the rods we were using but it was teamed up with an older Twin Power 4000

How's the size of this wind turbine! They're everywhere over there

'Perch'

A few of the local carp fishos with their enormous fishing poles

Probably the best Zander of the day caught by Juul (Yool) that must have checked in somewhere around the 55cm mark

The teeth on one of the larger ones I caught, this one was on bait

I was wondering when this

I was wondering when this would come up - in fact, it is so commercialized now that the experiance would be the same as walking into a "Bunnings Warehouse"!!!!!!

Great to see that fish are back in the rivers!

When I grew up there the polution killed all fish in the big rivers that all came from Germany industrial (Ruhrgebied)

THe reclaimed polders are indeed full of wind turbines and a bit of an eyesore, but this is what we need here as well instead of just burning coal and gas!

Never would have thought of

Sun, 2011-08-14 09:02

Never would have thought of it as a fishing destination, but good to see you got on to some!

When asked by a non-fisherman 'how many fishing rods do you really need?' the correct answer is either:

n+1 (where n is the number of fishing rods you currently own); or

n-1 (where n is the number of fishing rods which would cause your significant other to dump you.

Thanks guys.

Yep plenty of people there to experience some Amsterdamage but it's not my cup of tea.  And yeah it was with the same guy that iFish hooked up with, Juul said Paul was a pretty cool bloke.

I wanted to squeeze in a fish somewhere while I was O/S.  England would have been one option but Amsterdam was in the middle of the trip so I though it would be a good time to do it there... have a bit of a break and chill out for a day.  It turned out to be great timing, after tearing around London and Berlin for a week it was time to kick back and do something different.

This is his website if you're interested:

Will give the fishing a good

Sun, 2011-08-14 21:27

Will give the fishing a good going over next time there.

What Paul forgot to say is that there is a strong link with Western Australia in that excact part of Amsterdam.

This was where the VOC shipbuilding wharfs were and from where the Batavia left on her voyage to the Abrollos.

These ships were MASSIVE! and a marvel of engineering.

This is also where the very first stone bulding structure was build on Australian soil by some of the soldier survivors  from this famous shipwreck!

It is still standing!

Some maybe interesting bits of info could be that the bridges in Amsterdam open for pleasure crafts at 3 am every morning to let you through to the middle of Amsterdam and find a place to "park" your vessel in one of the "Grachten".

This is great to do the "Nightlife" in Amsterdam in comfort as you operate from your boat, walk to the pubs & clubs and when tired just doss down in your own bed on board.

There is also a Yachthaven opposite the central station where you can also park your boat fro a while doing the Amsterdam expirience.

Booking is very recommended!
