Well after fishing out there today they can have it, theres nothing there anyway. Oh so sour, one half decent fish would have made my day! 300 square miles is a bit full on thou!!!!
Just wondering what you guys thought about a 2km no fishing zone from metro shores. The beach fishoes can only cast so far and only so much coast is worth fishing from shore, leaving a fairly big barrier for fish to inhabit with little impact from the angler. Can only imagine the small tinnie brigade would be put out by this and maybe a 13ft or under size could be allowed to fish with in this zone.
Does any one have any info/links etc on breakaway anchors, please - diagrams, photos or videos of their operation.
By "breakaway" I mean an anchor with a breakable link to the normal connection, which breaks under overload and lets the anchor be pulled out "backwards" and come free.
Mark Pagano from Recfishwest has asked around the boating and diving groups but without much response.
The concept is understood, but real details and preferably videos, photos or other authoritative stuff will be needed to convince the Australian Communication and Media Authority (ACMA) to show that these will definitely limit the pull on the cable if it ever gets snagged.
Reason:- Unless the current proposals are amended, everyone will be prevented from anchoring in a large area in a strip 2 nautical miles wide, including the Hale Road reef, parts near the 3 Mile reef, etc. See the maps in the ACMA link below.
The anchoring ban will affect all boats and divers even if they are not fishing.
The ACMA's initial proposal was based on "close it all, with a few concessions which are no risk at all."
The change to a proper assessment of the risks and then management of those risks is a lot more work, much harder to document, much harder to educate and enforce, but avoids unnecessary restrictions which provide "protection" which the cable doesn't need at all - demonstrated by nine years so far without any incident.
Mark has been working very hard getting available information and data about the cable to try to demonstrate that most normal recreational fishing activity is no risk to the cable.
Any information will be used by the ACMA Protection Zone Advisory Committee and in submissions which close on 16 February 2007.
If you are likely to be affected, please take the time to make a submission and help Recfishwest with information if you have any.
As often, the amount of public comments and objections to unnecessary restrictions will decide how much notice they take of submissions like Recfishwest's and the discussions and possibilities for changes so far.
Or else when the no anchoring/restricted fishing/no potting signs go up in that 2 nautical mile strip - you'll know who let that happen.
I was reading about this in a hotbite mag and they said exactly what terry has said but the one thing that caught my attention was they say that anchors and even heavy fishing sinkers could possibly damage the cable! If thats the case i think that they need to revize the depth of this thing. If it get damaged it would be pretty costly i would imagine! This true terry or made up?
I would ask them why didnt they user a trencher when laying the cable on the seabed. Have seen heaps of cables laid on the seabed, using a trencher to put the cable out of harms way. Cant understand what the problem is really. If they really want to protect the cable they should get a Rock dumper in to cover it properly.
Who the hell is going to Police it for gods sake.
They cant even keep good policeman from resigning from the force let alone look after a cable underwater.
Just more crap we DONT NEED TO HAVE.
I say fish there anyway, if it has survived any damage so far.
They tell us we are all doomed with global warming so might as well
go out with a bang.

300 square hey
seem quite large for a metro ban. will this include taking of no fish at all?
and putting in a merto ban will only increase the kill rate outside this zone!
i thought fish like tuna sambos would be safe.

Break away anchor
I have some simple pics which I will post TerryF. I don't know how to insert the pic's into this comment, so look at new content for diagram.
I use one for those reefy drops where you know it’s snaggy.
Hope this helps a bit.
Cheers Jason
