Fishing Charter Recommendations

Hiya

I joined the forums specifically to get people's advice from here :)

I am looking for a Perth deep sea fishing charter company to buy a gift voucher for a friend. I think I have narrowed it down to 2 - Salt Water or Apache.

I am not really sure what makes a good charter company so I am hoping you guys can give me some advice and recommendations?

Is it better to go during the week when there are less people for example? A friend said less people is better because of the catch limits.

Thanks for any advice!

Liz

ONLY look at Saltwater

ONLY look at Saltwater charters...  you are not shoulder to shoulder like on many other charter boats.  Small group, quality gear, very knowledgable skipper, great deck crew...  I honestly cannot fault them at all.  I will be doing an abrolhos islands trip with them in the next year as well.

We'll plan to go in summer anyway so they will be back in Perth for then won't they?

I've tried a few but really like Apache. Matt is a great skipper but he may be up north at this time of year.

Just keep in mind when you

Just keep in mind when you want to go, and what fish your friend would like to catch.

Ther eis a 2 month closure on catching Demersal species (Pink snapper, Dhu Fish, Baldchin Grouper, Black ass) which are the top 5 and most targeted fish in the metro waters. There is a closure between 15th October and 15th December, and the charter boat operators have to abide by this as well so they generally only target Samson fish during those 2 months. Samson fish are a sports fish and many many people taget them due to the fight each fish gives.

Seasport charters is one of the best, if not the best going around, but operate out of Jurien. Its well worth the drive to take a day out with them. Hope this helps

 Thanks Bodie.

Can you eat Samson fish or is it catch and release? My friend is a chef - so she'll want to cook the catch! :)

 If she's a good chef she'll

If she's a good chef she'll be able to do something with a Sambo, curry or the like as it's a strong tasting fish.

Sambo's are not the nicest

Sambo's are not the nicest tasting fish around, but are edible. Would want to keep a smaller model tho, the bigger ones tend to have worms so im told. For most people its catch and release.

Samson fish

Agree with previous posts re Samson fish - great tussle on the line but no so flash filleted, though the flesh is excellent for fish cakes, the 50% fish 50% potato variety not the Thia type though as there is too high a flesh content in the Thai type even when liberally covered with sweet chilli sauce. Legal size being 60cm means there is plenty of flesh which equates to plenty of fish cakes. My recipe is to steam small sections so flesh (then gently break it up) mix with mashed potato, spring onion, egg & the obligatory salt & pepper lightly bread crumb & shallow fry, beautiful.
