Fishing in Cockburn Sound

Hey everyone,

My mate and I are planning to fish in Cockburn Sound for the first time on his boat. We are not seasoned boat fisho so I thought if I could get some advise from here. Could someone recommend us a spot (Can PM if you dont want it public) if you dont mind.

Thanks heaps

When I first got my boat last

Mon, 2014-02-17 14:35

When I first got my boat last year I did a google for Gravel Patches, D9, D9 Dozer, Pinnacle Rock, Sulphur Rock, Harding Rock and put them into the GPS

It was a good place to start and places inside the sound you can try out.

Didn't manage Snapper the first run but gave a good idea of where to start and managed some good Gummys off the patches

Thanks Tradewind and Rod_Holder. I manage to find some coordinates online too :)

Next question is, if we are wanting to catch a snapper (not very confident as this is our first trip out...) how heavy should I go:

A) Rod (kg)

B) Line (lbs)

C) Leader (lbs)

D) Hook size (5/0?)

Inshore snapper

- Go to the shop and get; 2 x 2kg bags of pilchards, burley pellets, tuna oil, 30lb leeder, large hard lumo beads, crane swivels, small ball sinkers, 4/0 mustad big red hooks.

- Munch up a bag of pilchards mixed with pellets, bread pieces and tuna oil. Put in portions (25 x 23cm snap lock bags work for me) and wack them in the freezer.

- Maybe suss the area out during the day first, but it's best to get anchored slightly up wind/current of your spot a couple of hours before sun rise.

- Put a portion of your burley in a scaler bag, tie it to the side of your boat and let the burley slowly drift out. You want a slow but steady burley trail.

- Rig: snell two of your 4/0's to about 1m of leader, feed on your lumo bead, feed on your small ball sinker (the lighter the sinker the better... If conditions allow don't use any sinker.. You want your whole pilchard bait to slowly sink down with you burley trail). Tie your crane swivel at the end of your 1m length.

- Use 10kg mono as your mainline

- About a 6 foot rod. You'll need to sling your pilchard out a bit. Snapper are easily spooked and I've found the best fish will take the bait a casts distance away from the boat, rather than under it.

- Be prepared to wait an hour before the fish come sniffing up your burley trail. Leave your rod in a holder and maybe flick around a plastic on another rod to keep you busy.

- Baitrunner style reels work well... allows the fish to grab and run without feeling any resistance. let him run for about 10 seconds then click on to your main drag to strike!! Awesome fun when it all comes together.

All the best,
Rosie.

Thanks Rosie for sharing your advise and the awesome comments.

The burley recipe and advise are awesome. I shall do that. I have some tuna oil lying around which i can put to good use.

I did prepared a few rigs last night. Gang hooks and single hooks with 60ln, 30lb and 20lb leader mixed. Only the 20lb leader is flurocarbon. The rest are just normal mono line.

I do have a few small sinker but I do plan to get more from Kmart. Swivels, i think I will need some heavier one from BCF which I will get them when getting the baits.

Rods, I have a few 6'6" so should be fine. Same for the reels, I got one with 20lb braid, one 20lbs mono, one 30lbs mono and one 60lb braid on a baitrunner.

I think we gonna have heaps of fun out there even though we may not encounter many fish. However, let's hope for the best!

Will keep you all posted for sure. Heading out this Saturday morning to Cockburn Sound. Hopefully, the swell, wind and weather are in our favour!

Likely the D9 location that has been mentioned multiple time in this forum.

Thanks for all the advise and those reading this thread, I hope you find some of these comments useful.

Cheers!

Tue, 2014-02-18 14:59

Try some big soft plastics to guys, I've just recently made the switch from bait and bang got two good snapper in my last two trips. Do some searches under snapper on soft plastics and Demersals on soft plastics both on the site and google heeps of good info there.

Hi everyone,I am reporting

Mon, 2014-02-24 15:04

Hi everyone,

I am reporting from Saturday fishing trip down at Cockburn sound. Well, we had a great time and the weather was beautiful.

We didnt catch anything decent though... :( Was hoping to catch squid, tailor, skippy, herring or garfish... but it seems that Butter fish is the only fish that took our bait. They were everywhere!!!

I am not sure what to do with them so we chucked them back. What do you do with them? Bait? Any good for eating?

Anyway, this is just our first trip with no proper GPS, nor experience.

Rod_Holder, I should have taken up your advise to get the aps and coordinates.

Thanks again for all your help and comments!

Snapperless

Mon, 2014-02-24 17:58

Hey Monfsts,

Went out 1am on Sunday morning to the 3 mile out from Scarborough. Fished till day break. Not a sniff of snapper... Couple of small sharks and a ray that took flight to shake the hooks. Lost a pile of rigs to the reef and toothy bite offs. Had my rig somehow come off the side of the boat while underway... Heard the line ping and turned around to see my reel missing all 300m of braid :(
....Re-spool, re-rig and look forward to the weekend so I can have another crack.

Fight another day!

Hey Rosie,

We went to D9 around 9am and not a single bite. I am sure we are at right spot as we can see 3 others boats around there but caught nothing either.

Another mate was out on Sunday morning to noon around Rotto area and caught nothing decent either.

Well at least you get decent bite.. haha and some thrill :)

Sorry to hear about missing 300m braid... that's quite a lot of braid!

We are not sure when the next expedition will be but I am sure we will get a GPS and some coordinates from you guys before hand.
