Fishing Cocos Islands

Hi guys,

I'm a newbie, first post. I'm heading to the Cocos Islands at the end of the month for a cpl of weeks and was hoping there were a few ppl who had fished there before and would like to give some pointers. A mate over there fishes with a cpl of the locals who mainly target wahoo, but i was wondering what other options there were. I know they catch sweetlip pretty easily in the lagoon, GTs if you're lucky off the jetty and sharks at night but was after info on bottom bouncing and and what else might crop up trolling. Also without starting a debate any tips on reel/rod/line and popper choice for the GTs would be much appreciated.

Cheers

Sorry Wahoo, missed this post.  Unfortunately can't help you with any info on Coco's, hopefully someone else can, just thought I'd say welcome and any questions regarding the site, just ask.

Cheers,

Adam

Hey Adam,

just got back last saturday from the trip, and am still waiting for my mate to return with photo's!!! Not a great deal of pics to post, but have returned with a wealth of info for anyone interested in travelling to these amazing islands. Only managed 2 trips out trolling on a 520 quintrex with a mate of a mate, on one of which we boated a sail a bit over 7'6'' and a barracuda just on 6'. Pretty exciting being over in someone else's backyard not expecting a lot to get a double hookup on those two!!Dropped a decent wahoo 10 mins into that same trip and also a doggie, both my bads.

Second trip had nothing hitting the pushers for 3 hours in trying conditions, lots of chop and 3.5m swell. Disappointing, but still an experience. Apart from that i was throwing some metal maniac slices which worked a treat on Blue fin Trevally in 2'-3' of water just in front of the small island we camped on for that night. Nailed a few of these and took some okay photo's along with the barra and sail, so will put em up soon as my mate gets here.

The weather wasn't the best whilst i was there as it was pretty blowy and with everyone working, along with ramadan being on there were limited opportunities to get out anyway as the malay's are the ones who run most of the charters.

Have been looking enviously at the photo's posted from Exy and can't wait to head up there with the boys soon.

I know Steve Correia filmed an episode of FWA there

He hooked onto some great GTs off the jetty and went chasing bonefish on the flats and hooked some interesting trevally.

The wind was strong pretty much every day Colin, we went out to the jetty 4 times and fished it once for nought whilst it was blowin a gale. Only the longtom about as well as a heap of turtles getting in the way. A kite surfer got bitten near the jetty the day b4 i left, apparently thought it was a shark but locals all called it for a barracuda. Not a common occurance but no one should be in the water round there as thats where a lot of frames get dumped.

I'll have to check out that episode you've mentioned, didn't see any bonefish out there but were a few cracker wolf herring mooching around with the small black tips in the shallows. Managed to hook one on a sp brown grub and it went nuts, only connected for about 20 seconds.

Steve C hooked a massive barracoda off the jetty in that episode. I think it was series 4.
