Fishing at Denham
Submitted by plugger on Mon, 2011-08-15 17:05
Coming to Shark Bay next week with my boat, first time there, just wondering if anyone has been fishing there lately? Would like to go to Steep Point and Turtle Bay trolling and also do a bit of bottom bouncing. Lots of deep sea fishing experience on the south coast but none up north (as yet) staying for a week, any suggestions? Cheers Plugger

There are good spots off Monkey Mia
If you are over that way, about three miles east and three miles north of the boat ramp. The fish factory sell whiting heads really cheap for bait. And if are trowling out around steep point and hook onto a mack tuna, with the horizontal shapes along their back behind their dorsal fin, they are poor eating but great cubed bait for coral trout which of course are great eating!

Trowl south off Black Rock
along the western side (and southern end) of Dirk Hartog Island. I am sure Black Rock is marked on the charts, but is quite visible. For spaniads. Affectionately known as mackeral alley!

Was in Denham 2 1/2 weeks ago.
Heaps of squid in the bay, some are huge, plenty of spanish mac's being taken between the peron peninsula and DHI, Apparently there are clear current lines out there and that is where the fish are.

We didnt even leave the bay
Only got the first afternoon to fish in clear weather, the rest of the time it was raining/windy and we were only there for three days. We just had a squid and saw plenty of people cleaning big macs, snapper etc at the tables near the ramp.

I would say coral trout are
I would say coral trout are unlikely except in the northern parts of the gulfs maybe, not too sure. at those spots off monkey mia, you'll get estuary cod, snapper, blue bone, blue llined emporer (black snapper) spainish flag, baldies (although I have never caught one myself) but I have got a rankin cod there.

Check the weather forecast before you go out , Turtle bay is about 40 Nautical miles or about 70 km its a slow boat home if the swell picks up. Caltex servo and supermarkets usually have the forecast and sea breeze. The Freycinet Estuary is closed for snapper until the end of sept.
I have caught macks and wahoo off steep point, macks, snapper, spanglies and everything else off turtle bay . Dorre Island has been the best spot for baldy's.
Turtle bay is also renowed for catching half snapper, mackerel and everything else that swims except nor west blowies, who says sharks have no taste.

Dorre Is
Where is Dorre Is? The only two charts I have of Shark Bay doesn't show it.

I would like to ask a counter
I would like to ask a counter question regarding towing a boat down to Agusta this november.
Is the boating and fishing around this town worthy of bringing it there or is a tinny a better option?

i know augusta like the back
i know augusta like the back of my hand. The weather is extremely fickle. if its any sort of wind there the ocean chops up. swell usually sw but wind usually E in the am. so that equals chop. if the wind doesnt get ya the swell will. Check with seabreeze.com for the weather and they are usually right. the Fishing is great for snapper, queen sn, dhuies, harlequin and breaksea. Need to travel past the islands 12km out. be carefull swell/weather can change quickly. If you fish the bay there are lots of KG whiting, herring. THe best fishing in the river is off turner st caravan park. stay away from the channels ,go towards the flats. Middle of the Bay. I know plenty more but i hope that helps you...
