Fishing trip being wrecked by cyclone
Submitted by lyle rogers on Thu, 2015-03-12 11:23
Anyone else having there trip wrecked by this bloody thing. cyclone affecting my trip to steep. apparently everyone must leave by 12pm today and not return until further notice. im due to head up on friday but not looking good at all. not sure what to do
was thinking of heading up to denham area to meet the other group of mates that have been kicked out and just fish around those waters until we get the ok , then will only be short drive in.
can anyone please suggest any spots or have any knowledge of that area and will be shore based with 4x4. was never really in the steep trip to fill the freezers so am happy catching anything of decent size no matter what the species.
cheers for any help or suggestions

kalbarri/wagoe
depending on wind and swell go kalbarri/wagoe area. Otherwise avoid it all and go south coast, explore east of esperance?
BTW I feel your pain I have had a steep point cancelled due to a cyclone a couple of years ago, not fun when you have been planning and looking forward to it

Point Peron
Point Peron would be your best bet, IMO, in that area for landbased. But, as it is national park, they may close that as well. Ask in town, shouldn't be hard to find out. Can't say i'd like to be caught out anywhere in the Bay if the cyclone tracks through there, no real shelter. More likely to track down throught Exmouth Gulf, then curve away to the SE inland, but that should be more obvious by tonight.

Good that you got the boat in Dodgy ,there are a few nice big rigs gunna have to get wet next day or so.
It`ll all be over by Saturday, Sunday at the latest.
Getting here if your not already and Carnarvon floods again will be the tricky part.

Thanks fo the advice guys.
Thanks fo the advice guys.
Yep we are absolutly gutted aswell, year planning and all the $ spent to go with it.
My mates that arrived there on monday have been killing it with the mackies and getting stuck into the baldies diving so ive been hammered with heaps of photos this week whilst being stuck at work then along comes cyclone olwyn. what a poxy name for a cyclone by the way.
I rang the nanga bay caravan park today and the guy i spoke to laughed and said he reckons they will be lucky to get a bit of rain and thats about it. he says his been living there for years and says the cyclones never come close and all they get is a bit of rain and also says that the closing of useless loop road and steep is a bit over the top (his opinion).
Personally i cant believe there going to close it just because of a bit of water on the track.
Ive never driven on the track wet so not sure exactly how dangerous it can be but have been at steep when its poured and no one was told to leave etc.
Hopefully if it does rain it evapourates quick and the ranger is onto it straight away and lets us come in.
Hope to see you up there butcher88. Will be there in the silver navara.
Hope everyone elses trips work out to.

gotta say, that sounds a bit
gotta say, that sounds a bit blase from Nanga.
Anyone who has anything to do with cyclones knows it only needs to be 50-100ks off the predicted track to either not see it or a direct hit.
Just because "they never come close" doesnt show that Nanga is that magical place that repels cyclones by some freak of nature.
I guess he is one of those who never bothers with preparation because "they never come close".
The predicted possible path might be projected 3 days ahead as 400km wide, someone in that strip will get it.
Give a man a mask, and he'll show you his true face...

Apparently you don't need a long neck to be a goose.
It's passed Carnavorn, still a Cat 3, and on it's way to Shark Bay.

Don't loose hope boys - I
Don't loose hope boys - I was at steep when a cyclone hit exxy and we were shitting ourself.....but we decided to stop at overlander to see it out.....as ranmar said it went SE and we were able to go back into steep.
The water was green for a few days but it came good and we cleaned up.
provided not too much damage to tracks etc.....these things normally hit hard but then pass quick, so as long as you're in a safe spot when it hits you can normally fish shortly after with no issues.
NOTE: my Experience at steep isn't with as big a cyclone as this bugger thou!

surprised
surprised the ranger can even be bothered to answer the phone! We turned up one day after spending the night at Tamala station ,there had been a little bit of rain a few days before, woke up and headed to the point. Not a word said. Passed a few council workers, not a word said.
Got to the point, Ranger says "what are you doing here, the road is closed?" i say " first i have heard of it mate, was no signs anywhere, Tamala said nothing" Ranger" i will call the Shire see if they want me to send You back out of here".
He came back and said we can stay, his wife is a lovelly person , was my dads first visit so was not a comfortable or appreciated welcome!

I'd be surprised if he's a ranger when I checked few years back turned out he was some sort of caretaker for the dec in Denham and had no more authority to move people on then you or me wouldn't be a bad sort of gig paid for squatting on the beach with nice little cash earner on the side with the feul freezer bit he does on the side

my mates are at denham at the moment and all the locals are saying that the ranger always over exaggerates when these things happen. i guess better to be safe than sorry and wouldnt want to be in there shoes if they didnt react and something bad happend. can only hope they do the right thing and let us come in asap if its only a small amount of rain.
i mean we all have 4x4 cars and some of us have done river crossings where the water is up to your doors so a little bit of a muddy track is bugger all.

My Take on Olwyn
From what I can gather about the cyclone is that its going to be about cat 2 when it passes Carnarvon around the middle of the day tomorrow [Friday] and its going to continue on the southerly track all the way down about 50km in over the coastal highway.
Plenty of rain has been forecast to come with it, and with the Gascoyne river expected to peak at 8 metres [the 2010 floods it was 8.4] it is going to be an interesting week or so' The Murchison, Wooramel, Minilya and Lindon rivers are all expected to break there banks and I would guess the ones just south of Gero will do the same .. Mate does station deliveries up to Nanutarra area and was lucky to get back this morning having to be towed through on 3 occasions, don't think there is going to be a lot of travel done in the coming week to 10 days. Up the middle would be best bet and hope Burkett road is reopened to get in to Exmouth would be the go.

My thoughts are with the people who are under it
It appears to have passed straight over the top of Ningaloo Station in the early hours--at 0600 it was 9 mi SW of Coral Bay with wind gusts at the centre of 195km/hr. More than just "a bit of rain" I hope Phil and Jane are OK. And that bloke at Nanga is right in the forecast path. I know it's common to say they're scaring everybody, nothing in it--just look at what happened in Exmouth with Nathan (?) not that many years ago. I was travelling home yesterday afternoon, passed a lot of big trailer boats soutbound between Geraldton and Northampton. Even though it has passed on the coast side of Exmouth , the ocean will be a mess, possible damage to infrastructure, local flooding, floating debris, water like chocolate.
Predicted to downgrade to cat 2, hope it does, because we are pretty well right on the forecast path for 1800 tonight. Calm here at the moment, bit of wind and rain last night.

Yes, probably Vance, my mistake.
Boats "buried" in the marina, due to siltation, sheds wrecked, trailer boats blown kilometres overland and recovered as wrecks. 0900 has this one nearing Cape Cuvier with gusts at the centre of 205km/hr, sustained at 150 km/hr. People get flippant, and yes, it mostly doesn't happen. Until it does. This one certainly wasn't the intensity of Vance: can anyone remember the name of the one which they lost track of and more or less wrote off, and then intensified into the bay, Smashed big boats up onto the hard at Denham, and put crayboats ashore at Dirk Hartog and Steep Point? Early eighties? It came on so quickly that anyone hanging on chain couldn't get it winched up in time--went from rain and a light nor-easter to SE cyclonic in literally minutes. Deb-A-Del went up, and another whose name i can't remember, Bill Jonnson was skippering it. The boats tied up abreast at the land-backed in Denham just smashed each other around, I remember seeing them come back down the highway on low loaders.

We were longlining out of
We were longlining out of Exmouth and left a few days before it came by luck, but there was another right behind it which caught up to us outside Jurien.
Went into Jurien to find the main phone exchange at Moora/Morawa was kaput so no landline, mobile, EFTPOS etc.
Managed to get Duck at the COOP on HF, to call the missus and tell her we were in port.
When he called back I asked him what she said
"is there a cyclone?" or something along those lines

April May is the best time up there Lyle. But if it was my trip I would still be going. Even if its a few days later (depending on how long you got off, I am assuming a couple of weeks) You know yourself its never as bad as it is reported. You could even try Kalbarri and dongara on the way up and back!!!

Coral Bay is a bit of a mess. Not too much major damage to main buildings but a few roofs and sheds and at least one sea container has been relocated. Still waiting to come of red so we can get to work. Carnarvon is copping it now.

Selfish question given the
Selfish question given the potential heartache in these places right now......
but has there been any reports of the state of the boat ramps as coral bay, exmouth marina and Tantabiddi ?
rememeber just after they put the new ramp in at tantabiddi that heavy rains on the range washed silt and crap thru that little inlet next to the ramp and made the ramp unusable (think the silt covered the ramp but if nothing else it reduced the depth to the point that you couldn't even launch a tinny)....
heading up there in about 2 weeks for for a fortnight for my annual run

Still a Category 3 as it
Still a Category 3 as it approaches Denham, forecast track is now right over Kalbarri. Very still and sticky until the wind started picking up right on the dot of 5.30 here, rain has cooled it down nicely. Rain getting steadily heavier. Everything was shut at 3 this afternoon on Police orders, no-one going in or out.If you didn't have the beer by three, bad luck.
Sitting here with a cold James Squire, looking at the Exmouth damage and red ocean on TV.

Tantas ramp is fine
Tantas ramp is fine apparently. Didn't get that much rain really.
Pretty annoyed by the cancellation. Power back on to most of the town and still another day till fishing starts. General feel is that it should of been pushed back a day or 2 and run in a shortened format.

first of all hope everyones
first of all hope everyones ok that are up in the areas that it hit and hope your lives can get back to normal asap. i have an understanding wife that has giving me a pass to go up to exmoiuth mid april with another group of friends that are going. would love to drive and tow the boat but i suck at long drives , especially by myself so taking the easy option and flying. do you guys that are up at exmouth think the water and everything else will be back to normal by then. have been to exmouth few times before and will be landbased most of time fly fishing and throwing artificials.
cheers guys

plenty of rain with it
It started raining in Kalbarri just before 5 last night, and was still coming down without stop when we went to bed after 11. Slept through until 0410 without hearing a thing--wind was fresh, still raining. I'd say the Useless Loop road would have got plenty.

hope you guys get over safe and get a good fish in, nothing worse than planning organising and waiting for a trip then something like this comes around to stuff you up.....been there done that before ! At least you are on new barge .

Gamex
Have heard the fishing club roof is damaged and front doors blew open so damage inside...road out to the mariner is covered in rocks....with all the damage in town to houses and I'm sure some will be the gamex committee houses and no power still for part of the town (although Horizon are doing a great job) I'm not surprised it has been cancelled.
As much as people will be disappointed there are more important things to sort out in Exy this week....only IMO.
The town would love thew tourist dollar yes but hell they went through a aggressive CAT 3

Hair blown back
Got the hair blown back when Olwyn passed over, reported at 205km.
We have suffered only superficial damage to the unit that I can fix but others haven't been so lucky with roofs blown off, most fences blown over, garden sheds demolished, yachts washed ashore but from what I have heard, no one seriously hurt which is a blessing because there were stupid pricks out wandering round when it was at its strongest.
Been through some shit weather and cyclone Alby before but wouldn't like to go through another like that.

Must of been out in force thurs then.
I left Perth at 12pm wed and drove straight through to exxie. Plenty of roos and sheep/goats but nothing really moving off the shoulder. Only one I tagged was at midnight on the coral bay road when I swung in to get a juice top up. Cleaned it up with the trailer guard and shredded a tyre.
