Fishwrecked site upgrade list

Hey Crew,

Going to use some of the donation money you guys have so generously given to update, upgrade things on the site when my computer nerd mate gets back in two weeks. ;)

1: Go straight to latest post on threads over 100 posts long, rather than having to scroll down and click to page 2.

2:

I have more but can't think of them at the moment due to a thumping dive headache, if you've got any ideas, suggestions, improvements then please add them to the list.  Thanks again to you guys that have given, you will notice their user names with a fish icon next to it as recognition.

Cheers,

Adam

Cheers Jes, will look into that one.

As for the photo galleries, they won't change, but I do need to re-order them a bit.  The first 10 galleries are those guys/groups which joined and supported the site early and is my way of thanking them.  Some new ones have slipped in above where they should be and will be re-adjuste when I get some time.

The other suggestions are great, will get onto them when my mate gets back.  C'mon Col, I thought I was being really subtle... Wink

I can try that Russ, I've been reluctant to do it before because I'm sure some numbnut from another site will try to continously upload stuff to slow the site down.  If I can set it up so you need a password to log into it then it may work, just depends on how much work is involved in doing it as computer techie's don't come cheap these days.  If its easy to do and viable then I will certainly look into it.  Good idea mate.

Definately agree with the CPU bu boofhead, I had the same problem on Saurday night when attempting to upload my pics - copped the same CPU screen and also gave up.

Point taken on the photo galleries - but maybe deploy Till's idea so we can sort them before we post. It's a bit of a drag having to scroll though, find and select your gallery each time you go to add a pic in a series?

    What about a FAQ section?

    Mon, 2008-07-28 08:28

I see alot of posts asking the same questions/advices as 100 times previously? perhaps a window could open after making a new thread with a list of previous threads with the same topic in title? It could be made more user friendly by only listing the top ten threads based on number of posts or reads?

Save option - for long posts (reports etc). Many of us have sufferred the pain of typing in a long report or detailed response to something, only to loose it just before you click  the Post Comment button. This can currently be worked around in two ways:

    1) External software - typing up the post in say MS Word (or some other word application), then posting it. This has limitations as you can't format the text compliantly.

    2) Incremental - type up, format and imbed images a bit at a time, post, then edit and add a bit more, until you're completed. But that posts the thread before you are finished - tedious and probably a bit frustrating for those that want to view it.

The save button, would save the content to the server, but wouldn't display a post. It would simply represent your post ready to edit again. With the text input scrollorable dialogue box up and the curser positioned at the last point.

You repeat this process untill you are finished, edit as required etc, then click on the Post comment button.

    (Hope that makes sense!)

I feel that deleting a post

    Thu, 2008-07-31 09:29

I feel that deleting a post should not be allowed. This is a public forum and sometimes the responses given are a reaction to the earlier or original post. If the post were deleted, the thread might not make sense anymore.

Yes, allowing one to edit the post has almost the same effect, however if the original post was quoted, then edited, the quoted response will not change (same for a quoted post that was deleted). It is then possible for the readers to draw their own conclusions.

However if the original post was edited by erasing everything, the post will still stay, but be message area would be empty. If it is deleted, it is gone with no trace.

Ouch - that hurt my head, can't think what it would do to yours!

LOL Alfred - Deleting Your Own Posts

    Thu, 2008-07-31 09:42

Thanks Alfred, had to take two panadol after that! hehehehehe!

IMO - I can see your point with regards to thread continuity, but I feel that if we could delete posts it would be better. I'll be self honest and humble enough to say that I have, on occassions, been guilty of posting content, that, on reflection, or constructive feedback from other members, I've wanted to delete. In such cases, I've simply sent a PM to Ads, Tim, Andy or Colin - depending as to who is on line at the time.

Personally, I think removing the original post all together and making the whole episode invisible is better and tidier as leaving any sort of 'footprint' can solicit further comment and inflame the situation, or at least, give rise to enquiry.

Self deletion, would also, of course save Ads and the team some work I expect.

    anyway...my 10c :)

For those guys writing a long post, if you're using firefox it can keep the data if you accidentlally close the window or your computer crashes. If you're not using firefox then you're missing out :p

For those with firefox, for it to keep the data, you need to go to Tools>Options>Privacy, then click the text box "remember what I enter in forms and the search bar" (or alt+f will do it too).

If you accidentally close a window, then go History>Recently Closed Tabs and click on the tab you wanted, and it will reload, with your data you've filled out as well.

If you're computer crashes, when you restart firefox, it will ask you if you want to restore the previous session. Click OK and as long as you've ticked the text box above, then it will restore all your tabs as well as all the data you've inputed.

Also, when you sign in, you can tell it to remember you're username (you can do this in both firefox and IE)
