Hi Guys, Where can I dispose of some out of date and very rusty flares, they were under the floor of a boat I just bought.
Apparently they wont take them at Fremantle .
Any suggestions.?

I disposed of mine at the Rockingham Tip on Millar Road.
Don't know of any place closer to you.

Dept of Transport
Drop them off at your nearest Dept of Transport or do as most others do and keep them on board and use them first , keeping the newer ones in reserve.
DO NOT dump them at your local tip.

Leave them in plain sight
Leave them in plain sight on your boat they will be gone in no time flat and if they malfunction and blow the thieving bastard up who pinched them so much the better. (joking - not)

I've always just kept mine use them first of they don't work you have nothing to loose if you get rid of them well your gunna be 4 flares short if the older 1s were good last time I had to set one off was about 4 years ago and had expired in the late 70s and was rusty and fucked but it worked so can't hurt to try

I was under the impression
I was under the impression its now an offence to possess expired flares? "Unstable explosives"
Another wonderful initiative...

Dated
As far as I can gather, you must have flares that are in date but in WA you can still have out of date ones on board as well.
Heard somewhere that in QLD its an offence to have the out of date ones on board.

Yep
We try to do at least 2 each year, though the last two we did were for life members who died, spreading of their ashes out front , 6-7 boats and approx. 120 flares set off.
Rang DoT to get a permit at a late date and was told it wasn't possible, told them it was going to happen anyway and we would notify cops and fireys, hey presto, permit faxed through in 40 minutes.

Crasny I do the same also,
Crasny I do the same also, sadly its at the point for me (at my age!) that I tend to care somewhat less what the letter of the law says and instead just do what I feel is right, not blatantly illegal, doesnt affect anyone and most importantly doesnt cause me to lose sleep at night.
Hence I have two sets of flares, save the price of a new second set and use the $100 for fuel for island trips- win win and win

Yes I have to admit I
totally agree. If there was a law saying dont carry old flares I still would anyway. Its my crew and my life that depends on that - not theirs.

canarvonite is correct.....
canarvonite is correct..... you can have out of date flares on board as long as you have indate ones also. I think it is illegal to dispose of them at the tip (I may be wrong). Sea rescue usually take them of your hands. Possibly police station???? They dispose of illegal explosives and firearms etc
