Floating Esky/Container Ideas

With the summer season coming on, I am looking at doing a substantial amount of wading in the next couple of months.

Mainly estuary stuff but doing the trip to penguin is land also too! Which can have a little swell when the wind picks up.

Looking for a sturdy floating design interested to see what set ups people have.

Just like a standard plastic tub? The 90mm pipe give you plenty buoyancy?

Fill the PVC pipe with expanded foam for some extra buoyancy & personally I'd go an esky over a tub. Might as well be keeping things cool while you're out in the sun.

Just as a little FYI with this one. In that sort of situation, if the ends of the PVC pipe are sealed and air tight, adding foam doesn't actually increase boyancy. It was something I looked into for my kayak, and if you think about it, it makes sense. The boyancy comes from a defined volume with a defined density less that the liquid that its suspended in. The lighter it is relative to the liquid, the more boyant. Since foam is heavier than air, it actually becomes less boyant.

Expanded foam is a real winner when things aren't sealed air tight, like dinghys, etc... But not for a sealed pipe. However, if the pipe were to leak/crack, its a different story...

 Archimedes principal

Filling it with foam (or anything that is heavier than air) actually DECREASES the net buoyancy.

Obviously has other benefits though

When we used to go crabbing

Tue, 2016-11-29 08:55

When we used to go crabbing my Dad would use an inner tube from a tractor, put the esky in the middle and tie it on.

Don't forget whatever you decide to use it has to be bottom heavy or very wide or it will likely flip.

Plastic shopping basket from

Plastic shopping basket from the shops with pool noodles attached to the sides at the top to float and keep your catch alive in the water and you can fashion a lid out of anything really but clear perspex allows you to see in.

Few of the YFW boys are using these and are happy with the results.

I have used a baby bath for years without any issues. Also have a wet sack to put over the crabs. Keeps the sun off and stops any crabs escaping.

You could use a plastic rubbish bin with holes in it with a tube around if for buoyancy. A mate off mine uses this set up for crabbing. Similar to the basket picture above.

I use one of those plastic tubs with lids

Guess they're about 100 - 120L

Drilled two small holes near the top to feed a rope in to tie off to

The lid clamps down so if it flips you wont lose the crabs

Anyone know of a legal source for the shopping baskets? Don't feel like having to do a runner from the local IGA
