Fly Fishing

Looking at getting into flyfishing for the summer, and my main targets will be hopefully Dolphin fish at the fads and also a bit of fishing in the swan.

1st question: is it possible to have 1 rod and reel which can fish both types (ocean and river).

2nd:  what weight line would you recommend for both applications?

3rd:  How do people generally learn to flyfish?

Cheers
Dean

you could possibly use one for both but you'll probably need a fly reel that holds more backing for the ocean than dams, rivers etc.
Weight I can't remember although there are a couple of types of lines to use Weight Forward, Shooting, sinking tip,
People generally learn to fly fish I guess in the park or in the river when it's not windy so you can get a true feel of it. There are some clinics that used to be run around the place so you could google them to see where they are operating from now a day
All I can recommend is that you stick with it. When you start to catch fish it's great fun with a fly rod, just watch your fingers! ATB..........Feel the force.........

Yeah max tried googling flyfishing clinics, only came up with tasmanian based ones and the pink flyfishing by recfish west.

basically would have to buy a fly reel for use in the ocean in regards to size, but have line which would suit both?

You might get away with an 8wt, but it depends on the size of fish you'll be targeting. You could pick up a good 5wt for the river and look at something offshore once you get the hang of it.

Dean, if your looking at getting an outfit soonish Campbells have 50% off a lot of there fly gear at the moment. I was almost tempted to get an outfit the other day but I'll refrain from chook chucking for a while yet.

Yeah I was going to wait until early next year.

Good idea bear, Probably won't use the lightweight one as much so i'll just get a cheapy.

So offshore i was thinking 10wt and for the river 5wt, would that be ok?
