Footy positions

My development coach recons that the footy positions "don't make sense". So he has his own name for them. I'm sure that he didn't think of these on his own but it's really confusing and I have got no idea how it works. If anybody knows the positions that I'm gonna mention, could you please show me how it works?

Examples are like high tall forward HTF, small forward SF etc.

I'm no expert but I think high tall forward is basically a tall forward that sits deep inside 50 and becomes a target for marks, etc. A small forward is basically just a shorter forward (e.g. Ballantyne, Walters).

High half fwd

Fri, 2014-09-05 14:15

Nowadays the High half fwd is someone that pushes up the ground and forms a deep press and spreads on the rebound.

Its got so technical nowadays and I'm still not sure a 15 year old needs to be confused too much but they are pushing these tactics on the younger guys to get them ready for colts footy and if your lucky to get drafted.

It's all about the match ups. A chf isn't always going to line up on the square in true chf position. Say he sets up deep in the pocket, a back pocket isn't going to play on a chf. He'd go look for a small forward to run with instead. Have I confused you more?

Footy

Fri, 2014-09-05 14:12

Hey mate best to ask your coach if your unsure of anything. Who you play for?

In answer to your question footy has changed a bit over the last 10 years or so and you need to be pretty durable on the field.

Watch this weeks footy and the following should help you:

High half forward - Jack Gunston

Small Forward - Paul Puopolo (defensive fwd), Ballantynr (attacking fwd)

Defensive Wingman - Sam Gibson

Let me know if you want any more cleared up.

But like I said ask the coach, I have been a development coach at a Wafl club the last few years and we will always want someone to ask rather than do things incorrectly.

Good luck champ

Yeah mate they confusing the hell out of me coz firstly I'm usually a ruckman but I'm not a ruck in. This cos this is the east fremantle sharks development squad, so this leads to colts, reserves etc. it's the top 35 in the district for year 8's. So we end up playing South Freo, Claremont, subi etc.

so out of interest what wafl club and what age? Us sharks might be taking you on later in the year

Perhaps use eagles players as example in those roles as lachie might be more familiar being an eagles supporter?

Nah I can put a name to a face for 95% of afl players. No need to "eagalise" things for me

I'm only 22 but I remember playin footy as a young fella and there wasn't anything such as a small forward and this.  Funny how the game changes even in a short amount of time.

So just for clarification, full forward is called (according to the coaches) deep tall forward I think, then the forward pockets are called deep small forwards I think. I'm definately gonna ask my coach for help.

Yeah mate not doing anymore

Fri, 2014-09-05 15:54

Yeah mate not doing anymore but was at EP with the 15s for a few years. Was good fun and hopefully they took something out of it.

Yeah we called them deep for players staying close to goal and high to press up to contest or beyond. Best to have a chat to your coaches and ask heaps of questions as you will learn more that way than from forums like this.

If your fair dinkum nothing beats hard work so if you work hard and listen results should come. I played in development squads with a few guys that went on to play AFL but at the time I wouldn't have thought they would get drafted

HBF, the best position on the field by far.

Footy is pretty simple - Be accountable, play fair, punch from behind, tackle hard and all forwards are poofs. Winning combo!
