Found - cray pot
Submitted by Wilzee on Thu, 2014-12-11 07:52
Hi all, I'm a long time reader first post. Reason for first post is that we found a cray pot washed up on the beach at Quinns yesterday. It's in very good condition and had fresh bait so hasn't been out long. It still has rope and float with ID so if any one is missing a pot let me know and if your details match up I will get it back to you.

Washed up craypot
Must need extra weight to hold the pot on ground, the floats must be walking the pot into shallow water.
Weights need to be on yoke end of pot to stop the floats lifting the pot when the swell is up.
This can also be the problem when people think their pots have been shifted, not enough weight or the weight in the wrong place on the base of the pot.

thanks for saying Hezzy.
thanks for saying Hezzy. Yeah I hope it finds its way back home and I wouldn't say no to a beer or two.
Also Old Banga the pot had no weights in it at all - must have come out some how.

not stating the obvious but
not stating the obvious but surely a phone call to fisheries may be more efficient.

It has the owners ID on the floats, then give them a call. but they may not give out the private info, so you may need to drop it off at fisheries.

good thinking fellas but will I get a cold beer from a govt department? I sent an email to Fisheries yesterday with the ID and my contact details. Standard reply was that they should get back to me within 14 days. So here it is on FW.

Been there done that
A few years back I found a plastic cray pot washed up on the beach south of the Mandurah cut complete with rope floats and gear ID. Contacted fisheries with details and asked them to contact the owner and tell him I had it (supplied name address) and could he come around and get it.
3 weeks later no contact from owner, I phone Fisheries who assured me they had passed onto the registered owner my details and the fact I had his pot. The end of the story is I never heard a thing from the owner, what else can you do to try and help some people.

I believe taking a washed up
I believe taking a washed up pot will still be viewed upon negatively by fisheries - in the eyes of the law still tampering with fishing gear.
Personally I would have done the same as you but my last call with fisheries left me disheartened about lost/found cray pots.

I agree with you
Yep feel the same way now. The same about trying to help people who have lost pots, unfortunately.

What are the chances of a gear ID being unique to only one individual? I would guess there would be plenty of double ups out there.
Do you think fisheries would really call the owner, (the right owner) if they did, you could be certain that they would come and get their pot.

Except it is a gear ID and not a / the licence number, everyones is the same Initials and date of birth. Like I said, there has to be double if not triple and quads of the same initials and date of birth for some gear ID's.

But it does narrow the search down a hell of a lot don't you think? And you would be hard pressed to find two people with the same gear ID's fishing the same area.

good news - Fisheries found
good news - Fisheries found the owner of the pot. Her name is Cathy and she's going to pick up this week. She said they were getting one or two but not bagging out. I recommended she gets on to this forum for advice.
