Freo Shark Mack on 4lb ( Video Link Added )

My friend asked me to show him some ground or Freo were we could catch some Skippy and bait fish. We headed out at the lazy hour of 10 am and stopped at the first cardinal marker just north of the mole.

We set the anchor threw in the burley bucket and started to get the baits ready. I had taken my little trout rod to catch some bait, it already had a small soft plastic on it so i gave it a cast to stretch the line. On the second cast it got hit big time, at first i thought it was a dreaded N/W blowie but it took of at speed.

Then i started to think , this might be a Samson as it realized it was hooked and peeled line of my 1000 Sienna with the 4lb braid starting to show the backing. I started to guess what it could be after seeing big flashes realized it was a Mack of some type.

20 minutes later and a few tense moments i had an aprox 8kg Shark Mack in the net. ( no i don't have callibrated scales Spence. lol )

Good thing was i got some of the action on video and will upload it as soon as i can .

I was pretty stoked to say the least and my mate (Chad) was happy with the spot i showed him.

We caught a few yakka's and other bait fish then then set Chad up to try for some thing bigger. He didn't get the big one but did break in his new Salty Fighter on a small Samson and lost one a lot bigger.

Not a bad day for just a bait fish and all within view of the North Mole. I'm sure Chad will be heading out there again for a bit of  light tackle fun.

Cheers Grant..

Edit : Here is the link to the video , hope you like it but there is a couple F@&K words sorry.

That would have lit up the drag on 4lb.

Your not supposed to catch

Mon, 2012-04-23 08:02

Your not supposed to catch hard running,  good size fish with a $50 reel using 4lb line...full credit to you Grant, very impressive

Thanks guy's

Thanks guy's , It was a real surprise when i filaly realized what it was.

Yeah the little cheap reel held up pretty good but the drag clicker didn't last very long after the second big run . I had my nice expensive gear with me but just flicked the little plastic out to see what was around. Well i certainly found out very quick .

Awesome work on 4lb

When asked by a non-fisherman 'how many fishing rods do you really need?' the correct answer is either:

n+1 (where n is the number of fishing rods you currently own); or

n-1 (where n is the number of fishing rods which would cause your significant other to dump you.

Great work

That's a fantastic effort Grant, especially on 4lb line....just goes to show that you don't need big reels with 50lb braid to bag a mackie.

Great video shots, too....looks like it gave you a few anxious moments before you finally had it in the boat. Sure tested your knots as well as the rod and reel!!

The 2 spaniards we boated

Tue, 2012-04-24 10:36

The 2 spaniards we boated recently didnt really put up much of a fight (using tyrnos 10 with 30lb braid) so thinking about trying a couple smaller spinning rods with lures to match. Not quite as light as you went though ;)

SHEEESH! Dont sharkies have

Tue, 2012-04-24 21:05

SHEEESH! Dont sharkies have teeth? Dahm good effort to not bust off, or was the lure in the lip, done well to set the hook, I nearly had the same story on a spaniard and a trolled popper on 5lb along a northern beach, missed the hook up after several strikes from side on (I removed the front trebble as talior generally only hit the rear) always good to land (or boat) a cool fish with the odds against you, awesome!

Sick catch! They go so hard

Tue, 2012-04-24 21:09

Sick catch! They go so hard on the light gear. I reckon they go harder than spaniards for the same size
