Full Moon Cod

Headed out on another metro deep trip with no real high hopes. A full moon and falling tide wasnt the best senario but gave it a go anyways. On the troll as we hit the hundreds the dollies began firing. Picked up plenty with salt water flys doing the damage. Left them swarming around the boat and head further for some jigging. With plenty of activity off the bottom showing and some great hits on the first drop our second drift paid out with Matt (holkk) boating a decent grey band on jig. Then one for me and another for lindsay. Boated a few more beauties and headed in. Great day on the brine!!!

Mine was powered by a large iced coffee, hehe. Jigs on regular reels and one electric outfit. Managed to get my cod on jig which I was pretty stoked about. Just jigged it though with the groper on the electric after fighting it for a bit. Geez electrics are lazy. I want one! Really just need one to pull up when you dont have something on. Only problem is the electric Tony had has a manual gear ratio that is super slow, so I got the fish up 20m in a few thousand turns of the handle and went stuff that :p

Was an awesome day! Hard to
Was an awesome day! Hard to as much better. Was a little concerned with the lack of dollies at the first FAD but Tony managed to hook into a MONSTER dollie he could barely lift!
He also managed this bizarre thing (a unicorn leatherjacket I think)
Lots of birds, but they must have been scanning the bait schools under the surface, unharrassed as I landed a slimey mackerel (on a pintail lure no less). Luckily the next FAD had heaps and we had it to ourselves for the most part.
Lindsay hadnt caught a dollie but managed to hook one on trolled fly on regular gear.
I decided to noodle it up with an actual fly and get a dollie on fly into the boat.
Coulda caught heaps more dollies, but we had a few and the decision was made to hit up the deep stuff.
We were supposed to head out without another boat but didnt eventuate, so just sounded around for a while. Saw something minor on the sounder so gave it a drift and hooked up into a few Centros (I forget the exact name, but similar to reds)
Sounder was having a bit of trouble picking up the bottom, but fiddled around with it and got a great image going. Heaps of stuff on the sounder (or unusual ground off to the side, its kinda hard to tell with a massive wide beam angle :p) and the fish were ddefinitely biting. Had a few good hits and few second hookups. Tonys rod loaded up really well and he started to let it do its job (dont worry, he was actually jigging most of the day too). I managed to hook up to something decent not too long after.
Tonys got near the surface and the line started going at and angle, so we started with the anticipation, til a large grey fish popped up on the surface. We realised we hooked what we were looking for and were pretty damn happy at that stage. A few minutes later, mine started doing the same thing but as it popped to the surface, the jig came out. Tense moment for a second there, but the fish wasnt going anywhere, so drove around and got it to the boat, phew!
And the obligatory vertical shot
The electric hooked up again and tony had a jig down so I took hold of it. After 100 handle turns and about 15m of line recovered, I figured I'd see how the electric went, haha. (maybe theres a 2 speed switch?). Pulled up a bass groper and another new species for me, excellent! Not one of the huge ones, but a start at least. The camera really showed off the blotches (wasnt nearly as obvious in real life) and the grey bands had barely any. Perhaps this fella being a juvie meant the blotches are more pronounced (seen very faint ones on bigger ones but nothing close to this)
Lindsay wasnt feeling to well for the most of the deep fishing but braved it and managed to drop a line down and was rewarded with another greyband, so everyone managed to catch one.
With that, we decided to leave them biting and head back in. The weather was certainly nicer back in and even managed a glass off by the time we hit the 5 fathom. Brilliant.

Pretty good timing on the FADs!
I got a call later that day to say the TAFE boat was out and they already started collecting the FADs. Apparently All Marine Services services came up with the anchors from a previous year.

great catch guys but I'm not
great catch guys but I'm not jealous of the slimy time you would've had at the filleting table, tohse cod are so slippery.
What changes did you make to the sounder to get it better Tony? Settings or installation?

Was funny when tonys cod
Was funny when tonys cod slipped off the table while filleting, haha.
The sounder settings were weird. Was getting very intermittant patchy returns. I first had to set the depth to manual as it thought it was only a few m deep. The default range only goes up to 300 and we needed 350 or 400 to actually see the bottom easily, so I added it in under custom settings in the range on setup. Was still patchy, I dont know why, so fiddled with the gain to find the right value (plus all the other things, but left them at 0), but again, still patchy (but the patches picked up much better). Then adjusted scroll speed from 2/1 to 1/1 and it suddenly picked up bottom nearly all the time. However, the really odd thing is that when I switched the scroll speed back to 2/1 or 4/1 it still kept the bottom the same? Was a bit odd.

A tip when filleting cod
or other slippery critters. Add a spike to your filleting table. The head or tail can then be pushed onto the spike and this stops the fish from sliding all over the place. With a bit of thought the spike can be removable so it is not dangerous.
