furuno 585 help and advice please
Finally looking at getting a 585 with a transom mount transducer for the tub and was after a bit of advice from anyone who has had some expereince with them plz... I havent been seriously looking at them for long but have been doing a fair bit of reading but have some rookie questions:
-Tranny: will a 1kw make much of a difference in terms of speed I will be able to do while still getting a decent read? Or does it only really help in deeper water etc?
-Tranny: I have noticed there are 2 1kw models that get regularly mentioned: the TM258 and TM260. Whats the main differences between these? Im prepared to pay the extra for the 260 if people recommend it being worthwhile?
-If set up properly, what sort of speed can I realistically expect to be able to do while still getting a decent bottom read? I understand that a lot of variables come into play (correct mounting/ settings etc) but what is the usual results with a decent installation and set up? I know it should read alright at trolling speed (correct me if Im wrong, but it should be able to still not just read the bottom but also pick up fish etc at 8-11knts?) but will it be able to do 20-30knts and still give a decent read?
No doubt I will be asking more questions when I get it (waiting on the tax return to hopefully be able to afford it!) but any basic advice on what sort of settings etc to use for this type of searching would be much appreciated as well
Cheers in advance, i know its a heap of questions, but any help n advice would be much appreciated

Furuno 585
I have the furuno 585 sounder and i reckon its great.. I have the 2 kw transducer on mine mounted on the back of the transom and its usaully readable up until about 15 knots.. Much faster and it starts breaking up..If you get a wet box mounted transducer inside the hull you will get good readings at a much faster speed but it costs alot more $$$.. Hope this has helped you out a little

In glass conditions , my 258
In glass conditions , my 258 will read bottom when going 30 knots and more in 200khz
easily pick up fish at 8-11 knots on rougher/normal days
the 260 is more sensitive , so I'd go that one
If I spent half as long fishing , as I do reading this bloody forum , I'd be twice the fisherman I am.

Furuno
My 585(you want the new model 587) reads at thirty five knots as long as its not too choppy! So if you mount it right yes it should, what boat do you have? What depths are you looking at fishing?? If it's only to 50 meters 600watt will be good if your going deeper spend the money on the 1kw

Transducer placement is
Transducer placement is probably even more critical for reading at speed than the power or sensitivity, so be prepared to move it around for best results.
Airmar say:
P66 600 W Good
Benchmark model for comparison
TM258 1 KW Better
25 times more sensitive at 50 kHz
16 times more sensitive at 200 kHz
TM260 1 KW Superb
50 times more sensitive at 50 kHz
13 times more sensitive at 200 kHz
There is a fairly common mount that people have, lets you set the depth into the clear water, or pop it up to avoid roostertail/drag.

its going on a Yalta 555...
its going on a Yalta 555... cant acess the hull without a lot of stuffing around and $$$ so it has to be a transom. Do a wide variety of stuff with it- but usually wont go deeper than 100m except for the odd occasion. but think I will go the 260 to be safe.
Snappermiles: yeah, I know the 587 is around... but from what Ive read there isnt really too much difference between that and the 585 to warrant the extra $? any more info/ advice on that?
thanks till, I had found that data- I thought it was a bit strange that the 258 is 16 x and the 260 is 13 x....?
now cmon tax fairy, do the right thing by me...!

Yeah, bit improvement at
Yeah, bit improvement at 50kHz, at the price of a little 200kHz performance.

one big change
is the bottom definition feature!! it will telll you what the bottom is ie rock, sand, mud, coral! well worth the extra in my opinion

good unit
i have the 585 with a 1 kw transducer which is transom mount, the transducer took a while to setup to get the best reading , i can get a good reading through to 26 knots on a alli trail craft
the tranny i ended up dropping down past the recomendations of flush with the bottom of hull to 20 mm below the hull to keep the unit in the water as the trailly is a bit light and comes out of the water and breaks up the signal but gives a good reading through the speeds and depths , the standard 600 watt will give a good picture through to 100 mts so it will depend on what your going to target whether to spend the extra $$ for the 1 or 2 kw , you will have to spend some time getting to know how to drive the sounder to get the best results as these are achieved better in manual rather than auto, otherwise look at a lowrance unit , my unit did throw up big rooster tails so i made a sorround to extend from the rear of the transom around the transducer body which cut out the side spray and helped with the signal , the good thing about the furuno is the chart scro speed which can be ramped up to suit your travelling speed. good luck with the unit

Can you take a picture of
Can you take a picture of that? Just in case I need to do something similar. As I'm still fiddling with the tranny so to speak ;)

585 with a 258 tranny mount
585 with a 258 tranny mount here, reads the bottom 100% at 40 knots. can pick up fish and bait at 20 knots at times. i only fish shallow so no need for the 260 for me. i too have mine a little lower in the water maybe 10mm below, makes a bit of a rooster tail but thats not an issue at all. Worth the 3k investment and took me 2 hours to install.

Transducer
It all comes down to where you mount the tranny. Different hulls will throw things out, i have a UB580 and read the bottom at 30knots. When I had my old tub it would drop out at about 12knots.

I've just dropped mine 5mm
I've just dropped mine 5mm for the weekend. The reading isn't bad at the moment but want to see if I can improve it. It's now sitting about 15mm below the hull. It's a 1 kw airmar running a 585. Will let you know.

620 with P66 transom mount
New to this - so just threw mine on the transom as quick as possible so I could get back out ASAP (was in Exxy). Might have fluked it because it has read 100% of the time, all I have to do now is master using the thing. Interesting to hear the concept of dropping the mount further! Could those who do please let us know how it goes??
