I'm devo'd . Firstly for Andrew, it's just almost like assault . But also for Gaff, if there's one Eagle I respect it's him, but this is insane. Bit in shock really, listening to WC supporters defend this I'm thinking I would probably punch their lights out ATM..

I can not believe the wc supporters comments on facebook who think its funny and he should just man up as it's a man's game.
I know with my old school mentality and family loyalty that if I was Andy's brother at west coast I wouldn't be able to contain myself and Andrew Gaff would be lying on the turf knocked out.
Adam simpson in my opinion is just as bad with post game comments, lost alot of respect for that guy.
The west australian media and wc will down play this just like always.
Andrew Gaff will always be remebered as a coward for along time, my only wish is that Johnson's shoulder ended with the same result that was dished out to Andy.

I agree Hezzy, I don't think the outcome was intentional by Gaff. Completely out of character but deserving of the punishment he will get. Having said that, I think it was wrong that the other team retaliate in the way they did. If one of the hits by Johnson on Gaff was slightly out, it could have collected him in the face creating the same outcome. If a coach condones retaliation by his team, then he is just as guilty. The umpires should have got a handle on it straight away. As for setting the example for young players, the media should not show it or anything like it over & over & over again.
I am not defending Gaff, he was wrong & like I said deserving of the punishment for a brain fade. A shame to see this happen & my thoughts go out to the young fella for his injury. I hope he comes back to the game and continues to build a great career. IMO.....

rob90. Did you see the punches that Ballantyne and others were throwing earlier in the game on the side of the centre square to rough up their opposition. Into the middle of the chest. If they hit your jaw you would also be stuffed. Im not sure what was going through Gaff's mind, but, if the AFL is serious about the rules then the following should apply:
* Any punch, whether to the head, back chest...anywhere should be result in a free kick. Im sick of seeing punches and generally shittiness on the field. Bumping is enough. Punches are wrong.
* If pulling a jumper is a free kick...then apply the fu#?ing rule. Im sick of seeing players get jumper punches, dragged around and generally roughed up by grabbing jumpers.
* if the head is sacrasanct (sp) then why can you take a screamer on someones head, with a knee to the temple, but as long as you take the mark its legit. Im not trying to outlaw screamers...but again its inconsistent.
Also, while Im glad the Dockers stood up for their team mate (I'd want the same for mine) the umpires lost control of that game and simply put their whistles away.
Also, I'd like to see Ross's lips when he spoke to Ballantyne just before he went out and flattened Gaff. If a lip reader picks up that he asked his player to do that then he should get in the shit for that as well.
I did then the best that I knew how. When I knew better, I did better.

I believe he may have told he player group that as the general message (plausible deniability - as all of the players if asked can say "Ross told us to leave him alone") but he pulled Balantyne asside afterwards and had a quiet word and the very next play he was involved in resulted in a bloody heavy hit. So, either Balantyne completely ignored Lyon (which I doubt) or Lyon specifically asked Balantyne to take him out which is what I firmly believe.
As a WCE supporter Im not actually worried about the penalty. It will be hefty, and given the severity of the injury it should be quite hefty., Im more shocked at the actions of Gaff. Mistake, frustration, whatever...just disappointed. Completely out of character.
I did then the best that I knew how. When I knew better, I did better.

Did he intend to punch him. YES i don't think this is in dispute.
So if his intention was to hit him then if he intented that sort if injury or not is irrelenent.
The injury is a consequence of his actions.

I think 6 down from 7, whether they make a statement or a fair outcome is anyone's guess atm.
I get he is genuinely remorseful and will cop his wack, but he definitely does not deserve to play for the rest of the year.
Personally would like to see a statement made to all players that if you punch someone to the head then you will be dealt with accordingly.
I also think Johnson should have been rubbed for his hit, let off too lightly.
He has not only let himself down but his team mates and fans as well as it may be the difference to gaining another cup.

I hope WCE club are giving Gaff support, seen him after the tribunal on the news & to me he looks like he is struggling with things.
He is a genuine nice guy who made a horrible mistake, but i'm not sure he knows how to deal with it properly. As i'm sure a lot of us wouldnt.
Being close to Brayshaws family should be a plus to help him.....
