Gardies galore!

Went down to port beach groyne this morning with a friend

nothing much apart from 3 massive bream(think they were buffs) swimming right infront of us

so we chucked some bait at em' they circled it and them swam off.

I chucked a few handfulls of burley in and within 3 minutes another 20 buffs start goin mentall right infront of us!

again we chucked baits at 'em but they swam off

we kept chucking burley in and about 5 mins later, (im guessing) about 600 good size gardies came within casting distance.

we chucked baits at them for a good hour with no luck at all, a few strikes but that was it.

Just before we left we looked out and there was a wall of garides stretching on forever!

Your post about buff bream

Fri, 2009-04-10 14:36

Your post about buff bream gives you the key to catching them , squeeze burley on your hook. (throw the burley in first then gently put your hook/burley in the middle of them)

Sheep heart

Fri, 2009-04-10 17:17

Get a sheep heart from the butcher and cut it into pieces just small enough to cover the point of the smallest longshank or suicide you can buy.It has to be small enough for the gardie to swallow in one bite. The heart is firm enough to last a couple of bites and doesn't fall off during the cast.Use a small float and 2-4lb line with 3-4 foot length of trace. Some people use a float with a hole in it to fill with burley

last two times I've been out there were thousands.
Stock up on some good baits guys before they get fussy. Saw them the other day for $19.99 a kg. Expensive bait.

im thinkn i over fed them with burley

Shorty so ur saying when the buffs are eating the sinking burley i put a hook infront of them and try to jag 'em? or somehow try to put the burley on the hook?

if you want your burley to

Fri, 2009-04-10 20:56

if you want your burley to stick to the hook , mix it with fish oil or water but put some flour in with it , as this will make it like dough then with the right consistancy you can mould it to the hook and it will stay on a bit longer

top fighters but very crappy to eat, would never ever bother to be honest

you can also but a stuff called stimulate, which is a bait thats mix's like a dough, similar to what you would get in a fish farm to use, top stuff too

Rigs for Gars

Fri, 2009-04-10 21:54

I saw a great rig for Gar at Oceanside Tackle. It consisted of a pencil float and very small hooks. Great in calm conditions. A bit like the POMs would do (like Roger Knife etc) LOL. But hey; if your into small stuff like this it's great! A bit of wet bread will work....

Way to go

Fri, 2009-04-10 23:34

Scale gut and head em - roll them out with rolling pin - remove back bone - place fish in bag of flower and shake - cook in very hot oil until crispie - Then you have crunchy gardie and you wouldnt notice any small bones -place on toast add a little mustar sauce and bingo - top tucker I love em...  If you still dont like em keep them for bait . gota be the best mackie and sail fish bait out there . Use to tow them around Rosemary Island up north with a lot of success . Cheers all

for gardies

Wed, 2009-12-23 18:30

for gardies that are timid and not biting try small UNWEITED hook with a piece of bread or squash berley on your hook-somehow!

yes...no weight is the key

Wed, 2009-12-23 19:11

yes...no weight is the key catching gardies. If you feel the bite you have usually missed the fish...

I use extremely small (size 8 or smaller) chemically sharpened hooks - a small piece of mulie or wet bread and just a swivel on the line.

Cast it out and as it sinks gently lift the rod to 'feel' for the fish. Catching them is a bit hit and miss but they are great fun.

I disagree - they can make great eating if you have the patience to fillet them properly. Very sweet meat.

gardies

Sat, 2009-12-26 16:33

if theres heaps one time a effective way if their not biting what i done was tie and 20 gram metal lure on , cast past the school, crank as fast as you can, and i snagged about 20 in the end, but yes forget hi tech tackle shit, have a bare line, no swivel, no sinker and just cast out with small hook and Baam., this simple rig is also one of the best herring rig, try it, it will outfish your crappy float the size of a life jacket
