Genesis Restoration *** All Done

Hi guys seeing as it seems to be the in thing at the moment... just chucking up some progress pics of my boat restoration im taking on atm. Boat is a Genesis Craft 600 Sports I’ve owned for quite a while now. Here it is when it was first purchased some time ago. Years of wear and tear have proceeded and she was looking a tad rough on the edges.

The decision was made to spruce her up a bit with a new donk and set of covers to begin with, but as the story goes you kinda get carried away when you start pulling everything apart. Anyway thought I’d save a bit of coin by looking for a second hand 4 stroke motor rather than by new, and the extra coin I save can go on a brand new paint job.

So ended up stripping the whole boat and restarting from a bare hull... Spent a few days sanding back the boat ridding it of normal wear and tear, bubbling paint rust etc from salt and corrosion. Regrettably spent ages removing the existing vinyl decals. They were a royal PITA! Found that leaving it out in the hot sun worked to my advantage. The hotter the aluminium got, the easier the old stickers came off.

In the meantime I had the staff at All Boats & Caravans source me a plum 4 stroke 140hp Suzuki that had done bugger all hours off a twin rig. Sold my existing 140hp 2 stroke mercury saltwater motor along with the steering etc through gumtree for a decent price which was a bonus.

They fitted the suzuki (along with all brand new throttle, cables and suzuki gauges to suit the single engine), new hydraulic steering setup and deckwash setup for me quick smart with out any troubles which was great. I custom made a face plate out of aluminium composite board in a gloss black finish to cover the existing holes from the stereo as I wanted to relocate the gauges opposite the new steering wheel.

So came time to either paint the hull myself or find some one to do it. Decided on the latter and asked Daniel @ DMACC Sandblasting and Spray painting to help me out. I dropped the tub off to him in Kewdale on Thursday morning and he spent the next few days prepping the tub and straightening up the sides etc as our choice of colour would need perfect prep for a flash finish. Dan was meticululous with every aspect. Pedantic with every dent and crease straightened over the whole hull including the doors. He even found enough time to sand back all the existing grip paint and ali floor from the whole hull as we wanted. We chose a 3 stage metallic pearlescent paint as seen on the Ford Focus RS just to keep Dan on his toes. Lol

Hoping to be a bit out there with this colour. He had it ready by the following Tuesday for pick up.

To Dans credit he pulled it off and least to say we were over the moon with the quality of finish. All for a reasonably more affordable price than the majority of other quotes we rang around for. She's currently sitting at home while we wait for the rocket launcher, bait board and windscreen frames to be sandblasted and powdercoated matte black. New windscreens are ordered so hoping to find time after Easter break in Kalbarri to finish her off. Will hopefully find time to keep an update here as things progress till shes ready for rebirth.

Wow is that colour

Sat, 2015-04-11 20:32

Is that colour in your face or what, as has already been said don't try to sneak up on any body you will be seen from 10 miles away. It's a great colour and I'm really looking forward to seeing a pic of the whole boat when finished, the workmanship looks first class. Knowing exactly what is under your feet gives you that extra bit of confidence when out on the water and you have done exactly what is needed to get that.

Tue, 2015-05-05 20:45

Been upgrading a few items in the tub. New stereo and vhf need installing still.

Added a fusion remote to cover the existing hole for the oil line from the old two stroke setup. Obviously not needed anymore.

hopefully find time to fab up some fascades to cover the existing gauge and radio cutouts to make way for the new stuff.

Still undecided whether to fit the Sounder and gps in flush or not.

Spend this week getting quotes for new clears, canvas and reupholstery.

Not looking forward to hearing them though :p

Tue, 2015-05-05 21:14

Have you thought of mounting them to a panel that can be removed easily. Bit like taking a trailer tailgate off? Would require boxing in the back of the dash to stop water getting in everywhere behind.

Or you could look at a lockable removable cover to go over the dash mounted electronics.

Well the boat is nearing on

Sat, 2015-06-13 21:11

Well the boat is nearing on completion... the majority of the past two saturdays weve been stuck in the front cab refitting the boat with completely new wiring.

Total overhaul with all the wiring in the boat removed and replaced.

Have installed a new lowrance hds12m plotter to go with the existing furuno 585 and 1kw transducer setup we bought a few years ago.

Installation of a couple more speakers to the fusion system was a must. It had its challenges in tight spaces, but are fitted and sound great.

The vhf is installed along with the fusion head unit along with new aerials and mounts to suit.

Now to find a spare few hours to replace the carpet... am undecided aas to whether to leave loose or glue it down.

I was also thinking of maybe putting down a waterproof underlay like articon or something for extra sound absorbtion and underfoot comfort.

Bit of mucking round to get

Mon, 2015-06-15 09:43

Bit of mucking round to get the carpet in but it came out alright. Figured id glue it down as the last carpet in it lasted 12 years. Hopefully this one can last as long.

The cutting was made alot easier with the use of the ryobi electric cutter. Nifty little tool cut very clean lines too.

Sikaflex sealant was used to the outer perimeter of the whole deck.

Was difficult to get a decent join with the extra bit of carpet but a bit of persistance and a strait edge and stanley knife it came out pretty good.

Tue, 2015-07-14 21:32

Interior cabin cushions were also reupholstered. Finally finished the electrical fitout to be able to pt them back in the front. Comfy and look great.

Helm is finally finished... new heavy duty sliding/ swivel seat bases replaced the existing s/steel ones. Now much sturdier with no movement from side to side.

Deckie will also be happy with a much sturdier seat also. Heavy duty seat bases worth the extra coin imo. Rock solid.

The kill tank got a bit of a spruce up also. Will be putting in a gas strut and genesis logo also to finish it off. The tank is completely sealed.

Tue, 2015-07-14 21:48

So the day finally come to take her out for her first voyage in green and see how the suzi would perform.

Headed to the river on Saturday launched from maylands. Water was a glass off all the way to the city. Awesome arvo to test her out.

We found she may need a bigger prop as it took a while to get her planing and she was reving quite a bit more than i expected.

This could be due to the prop size and pitch... as it came off a boat with twin outboards.

Also noticed that the previous owner may have had a hydrofoil installed. Will be borrowing a couple props from all boats for trial to see if we can find the best size to suit...

Tue, 2015-07-14 22:03

So to finish her off i've been designing the new sleek logos to be repositioned back to their original places all be it not the same as the original design. Keeping it custom.

Been playing with a few ideas in regards to hull decals...

Ended up designing a half wrap to hopefully protect the paint on the rear of the hull where most of the fishing is done.

Have been given a great price for the print... as i happened to know a signwriter that could give me a hand installing it also for a carton of coldies in return.

They should be going on Friday if weather and printer play ball. Cant wait to finally say she's complete.

What a great job you have done with the make over & the thread. Congrats on the finished job.
As for the decals, well I kind of like the subtle lines of the first one.
It gives the boat a sleaker look & doesn't dominate the over all look.
Perhaps where the grey is you could change it to a carbon fibre effect to compliment the seats & interior.
The others tend to crowd the side & give it a stumpier look.
My opinion but i'm sure it will look great what ever decal you choose.
But you realy have to do something with those trailer wheels Haha.
Well done again.

Like everyone before has said ...much credit and an awesome looking boat.
15K ??? not a chance. cant believe you got out of that for under 30k !!!

Now I look at my genesis and start to wonder ......hehe

again job well done hope to see you on the water sometime.

:)

from the first photo: now I'm sure next time you go out fishing with bait you will have a drain hose from the baitboard to the water drain near the motor mounts lol

So have been a bit preoccupied of late with work, weddings and this bloody rain... But have manage to get some more of the finishing touches done.

Norm from outstanding signs did a great job with the stickers... I provided him with all my artfiles and logos and all he had to do was cut them for me and install them.

Have to thank Eoin at Trident Signs in Wangara for printing my vinyl wrap at a great price. Here is the wrap ready to be put on.

Hoping to get it on this saturday as Norm the signwriter who provided and installed the vinyl decals wasnt to keen on installing a wrap for the first time lol.

Had another test drive with a new prop last weekend. After helping a young couple at the ramp from submerging there boat... Bungs... Dropped her in at maylands again for a longer trip to freo.

We were immedietely pulled up by the water police doing circles around us. We knew it was for the missing boat rego on the hull.

The cop was real nice for a change and asked if it was a new boat. We told him we've been rebuilding it. Put a smile on both my brother and I's face to hear that though haha.

Just asked if it were registered etc... we said we'd electrical tape a makeshift rego on if need be. He responded it'd be a shame to ruin that nice paint job so dont worry bout it. Have a nice cruise.

Top Bloke!

Tested a 21 degree pitch out and found she was revving alot better in the ideal range for the motor.

Replaced the gearbox so the rotation is back to standard which inturn cleared our sounder interference. All smiles :)

We found a bit of time the day before to install some lightbars to the front and rear.

A couple in the front and a larger one to light up the back motor & transom at night. May also come in handy squidding too ;)

All the brackets have been plasti dipped to stop corrosion of bare metal and all the bolts were replaced with stainless.

Made sure to keep a barrier between the bracket and hull also.

Decided i wasnt happy with the side stickers so had them replaced on Sunday. Norm was happy to take them off and replace them with a different bunch.

I may have gone a bit stupid with a few more here and there.

Also decided to chuck a stainless steel gas strut inside the kill tank for ease of use while at it.

Sun, 2015-08-30 16:44

Finally found a bit of time this weekend to organise my cousin Andrew from Rapid Graphix & Signs to come install the boat wrap.

He did a superb job with it very happy with the outcome.

Snuck a quick pic in between passing showers saturday morning.

Now to find time and money to start the trailer reno's :/

So we finally had a day free

Tue, 2015-09-29 12:12

So we finally had a day free to finally get the boat out offshore since its rebuild.

Sadly only had the public holiday Monday to head to 2Rocks... along with what seemed to be half of Perth haha.

It was nice to have a few members on here that had been following this thread come up and say hi and have a quick gander of the tub while waiting in line early yesterday morning.

Pleasure talking to and meeting you.

Our mission was to firmly blow out any cobwebs in the motor and go find some sambos for the day as we'd been itching to stretch the arms after a long wait without having a jig.

Was very happy with the boats performance, no problems just a heap of smiles and sore arms by the end of the day!

Thanks guys for folllowing just need a cool pic of the tub on the water now ;)
