George Grey Dve

G'day all,
Heading to Kalbarri in a couple of weeks for some R&R, just wondering if it's worth taking George Grey dve in for something different than just heading up the highway?
Also is the Blue holes any good for shore based fishing? As it's virtually across the road from where we are staying. Love a nice pan fried Tailor for breakfast.
I haven't been to Kalbarri for years and last time was fishing Red Bluff beach. Any other tips appreciated.

Andy,
If your not taking your boat, book a day out on Reefwalker Charters.
Mrs and I had a great day out with them last visit to Kalbarri.
Have also had top days out with Evolution but I think Whitey may only be operating out of Exmouth now.
Enjoy your break !

Good little detour Andy. Take some nibblies and a tipple to start your trip off on the right foot.
My wife understands why I clean my rods n reels in the shower....

Fishing
I could be wrong but I think the Blue Holes is a sanctuary zone so no fishing allowed. I read somewhere recently that the whole river mouth is still full of sand from the cyclone a few months ago so I guess fishing there sounds unlikely too. Best bet would be the beaches to the south, Wittecarra Creek I think it's called. Seen some nice tailor come in off that beach.

Sanctuary zone
It extends immediately south of the blue holes car park for 240 metres, covering the reef holes through that area. The best tailor water is immediately north of the blue holes car park so can still be fished. Pulled some big tailor out of there when the southerly blows and swell is up

Also try Chinamans Rock out the end at night Andy
My daughter's ex BF hooked a big Tailor on a dark coloured popper casting out at the reef last year. Was around a metre long and he lost it at the rocks when he tried to lift it up. Biggest Tailor I havd seen. Thought it was a Mully at first. Just bs careful climbing over those rocks in the dark

Stops on the way
If you are taking the Gregory-George Grey way there are a couple of nice stops on the way.
Short detour into Horrocks is worth it for the beach & the jetty, then take White Cliffs rd just out ot town, great scenic road brings you back to the Gregory Rd further north.
Lynton Convict Station is worth a look, a couple of kays before the George Grey turn off, (free).
Pink Lake is best viewed from the lookouts on the road into Pt Gregory, only a few kays past the Kalbarri turnoff.
Mate who lived in Kalbarri for many years says:
Casting for tailor at the reef between Back Beach & Blue Holes, early morning when sun just hits the waves is best especially on a good tide, and at sunset if the wind is friendly.
Fishing at Red Bluff, walk around a bit and cast back to shore...Walk a bit further up the beach to 'shark fin rock' (a rock that sticks up out of the sand?) also a good spot.
At Chinaman's, bait & lures, it also pays to walk around the rocks a bit and cast back into the 'gully' in the reef, easy to see apparently.
The guys at Kalbarri Sports & Dive will be your best local, helpful source too.

Hi sea-kem,All the previous
Hi sea-kem,
All the previous advice regarding Kalbarri is on the mark. I generally lure fish for Tailor at likely looking spots between the Blue Holes and Back Beach. Some additional tips:
- Bring a pair of reef boots. preferably with spikes, as the reef at the moment with winter algae build up is a bit slippery and you'll need to get your feet wet at times
- Poppers work best with a bit of white-water around. My go-to lure is the 135 Roosta Popper. I've also had a fair amount of success with the Needle Nose GT Ice-Cream (2oz), which can be hard to find but there is a new, cheaper imitation the Dr Hook Longtom, which looks very similar and can be found more commonly. If the swell is down and there's less white-water, metal slices tend to get more interest.
- If you're fishing the reef section described, a longer rod helps in manouevoring lures/fish. I'd suggest 9ft plus if available.
- Don't ignore the water right by your feet. Tailor often hit lures in the water washing up and onto the shoreline.
- In and around high tide seems to be more productive, no matter what time of the day but there's always a chance at other times.
- Pay a fair bit of attention to your first few casts, as this is when you're most likely to get a hit. My experience has been that the longer you thrash a section of water, the less likely you are to get attention. If nothing happens after 30 casts, move on a bit and try again.
The Tailor have been a bit quiet for me lately, though I did pick up an okay fish this morning. You can generally find me meandering along from the Back Beach carpark (look for mangy old silver Pajero) in the late afternoon if things look okay, so you're welcome to say hello.
Cheers,
Mathew
*Note: The Chinaman's disabled jetty no longer exists thanks to Seroja, though you can still access the area and bait-fish from the rocks/beach along there. If you want to toss lures at Chinaman's, as others have suggested, walk around the back and cast North to North-West into the channels and white water (if it's safe to do so).
