Giant trevally

Seen some pictures of these caught land based off the beach. Can they be in metro or are they only up north in the pilbara? If u can catch them metro or under 2 hours north or south what bait, rigs, time, tides etc. are best?

Even with the warm waters I find it hard to believe that GTs would be down in metro waters let alone close to shore.

Like your ambition, Lachie...

...a couple of points:

Over the past few years we've seen marlin inside rotto, sailfish in Geo Bay, wahoo at the fads (and closer), a whale shark in the sound, and, less than a week ago, a large cobia caught out from (I think) Mindarie, by a FW member. So never say never!

However, with heaps of people throwing poppers/stickbaits at shallow reefy systems from the SW to Kalbarri, particularly during salmon season (warmest water temps of the year), you'd think by now that somebody somewhere would've picked up maybe even just a little GT. And to the best of my knowledge, it hasn't happened. You'd have to go to at least Shark Bay or Carnarvon to start having a real hope, I would think.

Good onya tangles for offering to take the young bloke fishing...a couple of days with you up there and he'd forget about GT's!

Well said

Well said tangles, we all have to start somewhere & it's better to encourage young folk that put them off. I'm sure he will be soon posting pics of his catches that we will all be jealous of.

I am heading up to Kalbarri on 5th Sept for a few days, so i hope you can organise some nice weather for me.  lol

cheers Rob

just to add to the debate- my Australian AFN Fish ID guide says GT's have been caught as far south as rotto, so whether this is based on hard facts or not, with all the reef systems and warm water that gets pushed down there would have to be a few getting around. Obviously not enough to be worth targeting, but basically the whole 3 mile reef which runs right up the metro coast is prime territory for GT's, especially for those willing to get in really close to the back of the breakers casting good size poppers and stick baits, worst case you can expect to encounter YTK fish

Trevally

Tue, 2014-08-26 09:13

I saw April 2013 a Giant Trevally (15kg) caught about 1-2km upriver from river mouth of murchison (Kalbarri) by a fellow angler and I almost passed out in shock, I pinched myselfs with the pliers just to check that I wasnt dead.

From everyones reaction that far south is uncommon!!!

Small trevors

Tue, 2014-08-26 09:45

are very hard to tell apart, BUT I am almost 100% sure I caught a small GT once at frustrations reef in barri. I originally thought it was a brassy but it didnt fit that bill. I do love my Fish ID so photo-d it and did some research. Unusual down that far but not unheard off. Getting more common in Shark Bay up so its not that far and with the tropical's heading down I would expect more reports.

You just never know!!!

And Lachie - keep firing away. We will try and answer questions as best we can.

In the river definitly he had terrible gear (But smart enought to have a very loose drag and it had paddock to run free), just on a mulie on 3 gang of 3/0s going for a tailor.

From www.wildernessisland.com

From www.wildernessisland.com.au/the-fish/giant-trevally/:

The giant trevally’s range extends eastwards along the Asian coastline including Pakistan, India and into South East Asia, the Indonesian Archipelago and northern Australia.[4] The southernmost record from the west coast of Australia comes from Rottnest Island, not far offshore from the capital city of Perth.

So obviously not impossible to get them this far south. As mentioned above there have been plenty of "northern" fish caught recently so always worth a shot.

We were diving west side of Dirk Hartog 2 years ago just off the cliffs when one of the boys was surrounded by a school of GTs around 20kgs.

If that wasn't enough, after shooting a baldchin not long after, he had a massive school of yellowfin up to 44 gallon drum size swim past. He's not one to ever brag either.
