Gibb/El questro fishing

hi all
i am taking a well deserved break from the world and heading to the other K-Town (Kununurra) via a few places each way including the Gibb. We have no agenda other than a week booked at El Questro at the wifes insistence.
Question i have - is there any worthwhile fishing around EL Questro in terms of landing a fish for my son (rather than catching a meal)

cheers

You did well getting a spot.

You did well getting a spot. I was after a van site at El Questro and tried booking 3 months ago and couldn't get in. We ended up booking Kununurra and will be day tripping down.
Barra will be tough this time of year but I'm taking the car topper and will be chasing red claw, Sooties and probably a bunch of catfish out of the lake.

The creek

Mon, 2021-06-21 14:20

We stayed there camped on the river there many years ago and I managed to catch one in the creek there after a few fruitless mornings of casting. It was good timing as we had commited to stay another night as the area had so much to see and we were down to eating baked beans for dinner, needless to say the fresh fillets went down a treat. There were some other rock pools around that they catch them from but might be a bit cold for them now.

We did better fishing the Pentacost,  just followed the bank before you get to the crossing and went towards the mouth until we came across a lone tree and a small feeder creek. I was told that this was the "killing tree" where some tourists were killed many years ago by a crazy gunman. Anyway we put the dingy in and just trolled the pool out there in front of the bank and landed 3 nice fish including on of 950mm by my Missus on a lure she thought was a pretty colour ! just be careful if fishing this area from the bank I reakon there would be a few crocs around.

Good luck and enjoy.

Kill Tree

Kill Tree is a famous spot, but the tree got chopped down due to the sad history of that spot, otherwise ask at Red Sun sports in Kununurra how to get to the Keep River, which is just over the border in the NT, but accessed from the WA side. Its where the locals go for barra.

Live Sooties under a float

Mon, 2021-06-21 18:42

We were up there in 2016 week after school holidays spent 5 days at ElQuestro. We're booked into a powered site but did not like it so went along the river in the non powered sites. Best camp site as we put up a rope swing, had a fire every night and could catch little sooties and archerfish from our camp all within walking distance from the showers and bar. We fished a couple of kms up the river with live sooties under floats where the river starts to pool. Hooked a number of Barra but unfortunately all threw the hooks. It was also really cold while we were there. Not sure how old your kids are but catching the livies was part of the fun and the biggest issue was the sooties were quite big but the Barra still had a crack at them. Some of the gorges and swimming holes there are awesome and great spot to hang with the family.
