Gillards suggestion at an imposed Tax levy after the floods
Submitted by Bodie on Fri, 2011-01-21 15:54
Well this topic should open up a can of worms ove rthis political debate over the suggested tax levy, im sure Adam was dredding someone bringing it up :)
Whats everyones opinions? For? Against?
Personally, im against it. Only from past experience we can see other tax levy's imposed which were never removed. (there is a tax in Victoria applied to the price of petrol of 4c i think for the failure of some big emipre? Christopher scaffe or whatever his name is?)
I think there are better ways to raise cash, than tax the people effected by the floods (as this would include all effected)
I also think if she were to bring in a Tax levy, it would sign the end of per political career in the top job.
Thoughts?

If they had more levees in
If they had more levees in the first place, they wouldnt need this levy ;)
Article on the subject
They actually had a comparison of financial costs of distasters in the paper a few days ago and it had the Perth hailstorms (combined with Sydney?) as more costly than the current floods. Though, I suspect that figure has since been updated (especially since flooding in NSW and Vic). Of course, there were no calls for levies then. I suspect the mention of the levy wasnt necessarily a serious idea, just that the media pounced on it. The government has been looking for some sort of new tax since the mining tax got squashed. Something is probably inevitable in the long run with our aging population, but you cant please the masses by planning for the distant fiscal future...

die hard i dont see
that as racist! why should we be giving them so much money when they cant even help stop the boats coming! i think the best way to raise money and stop the boats in one hit is stop all aid to indonesia! there government has gotta be taking bribes from these people smugglers so stop giving the government funds untill they patrol there waters better! this will help stop the boats and give us alot of extra cash to help with the floods!

Personally like to
see the Federal Government, stop all aid to 3rd world countries, as we need the money to clean our own back yard up. I think we have forgotten the people in Carnarvon, just hope they are getting all the help they also need and desperately deserve.
Think Hawke also put 2 cents on petrol for the by centenial, don't think that has never been removed either also Court Jr put a levy on petrol for fixing our roads, wonder if that is still there or is being used to the best advanced for us WA people.
Doesn't matter which political party you vote or like, they'll all ream you one way or the other

fu@k#d if I can work out why we give out money to the rest off the world with out batting an eyelid but when we need the coin we need to pay for it directly out of our pockets. Now i dont mind helping out fello aussies dont get me wrong,Its just the government doesnt seem to be willing to reach into their back pocket unless the everyday hard workin aussie puts it back in via some sort of bullshit tax!!!!!!!What is the government thinking?????the people that have been affected by these floods have just had a new hurtle, being proposed by the pathetic, immigrant loving, cross dressing, international suck hole that runs this country. Thanks gillard for absolutly stuff all!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Breath
Had to have a deep breath after Meersy's blast.
Stop giving oversea aid and we will have more than what is needed with lots to spare.
Don't believe in supplying other countries with aid unless they are in the same sort of shit Qld and Vic are in now , haven't seen Indonesia sending aid, China, US ,Pommyland, India and others are sending millions but not the ones who's votes we need in the UN or is that classed as bribery not aid.
Run a couple of multi million dollar lotteries and watch all the punters buy a ticket, I'm sure I would and probably more than one.

Well, of those countries,
Well, of those countries, only the UK is a first world country, and they spend over 10 billion pounds. Though Australia spends more in percentage of GDP. As for foreign aid, have a read.
People say that as if the government isnt going to do anything about the floods. As for having "enough needed with lots to spare". Well, not really how economies work all the time. Its not like we cant get the money. Instead of saving money on aid, why not cut or adjust other services that dont need to be that high? A good suggestion I heard was rerouting some economic stimulus projects (seeing as the money would be spend, the stimulus still works).
The lotto idea is an interesting one. You could even say half the winnings get donated too.

Big Business
Bell Resources ring any 'Bells' - $50 per drivers lisence to pay for that (1992?) - never removed......Cheers Bondy, B.Burke and Co......Pricks.
I think the government should get the insurance companies to actually agree on a legal definition of 'water damage' whether from flood waters or not. i.e. Rain comes down - covered, however flood waters rise from rainfall - not covered. Go figure......

ah yes we CAN afford a
ah yes we CAN afford a $45billion NBN for our faster porn, but we CAN'T afford a rebuild, new dams and proper flood prevention... Miss Ginger Ninja has lost the plot!
1, scrap the NBN and rebuild the country, NBN is not much use without power and houses to watch you super fast porn in!
2, get dams in the right spots
3, tell people if you build in a flood plain, you F#@$% and no one will help you out next time. PS you can't build anywhere in Perth on the Swan ir Canning in the 100yr flood plain housing. FACT...go check with the council.
4, accountability, responsability and cause & effect needs to become a national ethos, pollies included,
hey jmo

Here's a simplified
Here's a simplified comparison. We had a beach access (Boat ramp ) built at our caravan park and a levy was imposed every qtr until it was paid off. There were of course the nay sayers who don't have a boat. But forget to remember that they might have kids who use the swings or other park ammenities. The point is that it's for the good of us all in the long run. I'm not supporting the Ranga or The priest just the principle. P.S I don't like paying any extra taxes but if the cause is the right one and it's transperrent.

I find it hard to put a tax
I find it hard to put a tax on, when alot of fellow aussie have already made donations to the flood apeal. do we make them pay more on what they have already donated or will they get a refund. the qld goverment should have plenty of money anyway with all the tax increases they have had in the last 3 years. for example petrol tax has gone up 8c L, car reg gone up, land rates gone up. just about every thing has gone up in qld. My bet is they will put the gst up to 12% to cover it all. i think we need to get rid of all the pollys and let the people run the country.
thats my 2 cents worth
thanks rocky

The 8c/L was not extra tax,
The 8c/L was not extra tax, it was removal of a subsidy for QLD only. So queenslanders were getting subsidised 8c/L which other states werent. The removal in 2009 just brought it in line with all other states.
Land taxes always go up, because the value of land goes up. If property prices halfed, so would your land tax. See here. So in terms of dollars they go up, but in terms of percent they dont necessarily. You're not paying more percent.
