Go pro vs cheaper action cams
Submitted by Mattyb84 on Tue, 2014-10-07 08:53
Hey guys I have been looking into setting up a few cameras on the bar work of my boat and was wondering if anyone could shed some light into why go pros are 3 times the price of other action cams. I've looked at the specs on a few different brands and they all seem to do the same thing other than the go pro can go down to 40 m and the rest are only 10. That doesn't worrie me as I don't dive is there any thing else I should no or are you just paying for a name. Cheers for reading and look forward to your input

I have a couple of intovas that I find are great. Easier to use than a go pro as far as I am concerned.

I have two Gopros and unless you intend to publish in a professional sense, I would suggest on the alternatives.
I have luckily gotten both of mine for free and wouldn't buy one.

I have had an SJ4000 for a few months now and I love it. Records in 1080p and 12MP stills. Looks identical to a GoPro aside from being a different colour and slightly thicker. It fits all the GoPro mounts and comes with a number of accessories included. On it's own it is around $100 but with the battery onlt lasting around 90mins I bought 2 spares for around 6 bucks each. I also got a car charger for $10 or so which lets me charge it via the ciggarette lighter whilst recording all day long if need be. I would highly recommend it and it can to around $200 all up including express shipping.

Theres a reason why Gopro is the best and most expensive. No other action camera even comes close.

You are right. No other
You are right. No other company spends near as much money on advertising to justify their higher price...

When comparing specs you
When comparing specs you gotta look a bit deeper. For example, Yes alot of other action cameras film in 1080p, the sj4000 records 1080p at 30 frames per second, the Gopro 4 records 1080p at 120 frames per second, thats 4 times as smooth as the SJ.
Like I said, there's absolutely no comparison

i use one of those cheap ones
auidiosonic has the screen built in comes with 5 attachments and water proof case easy to use and only $65 only waterproof to ten meteres but a mate has had his down to 40m no problems ,like others have said probally not as many frames per second as a gopro but unless your using it to make a hollywood production its good enough

My wife bought me the
My wife bought me the Audiosonic one and I've sent it down on crab nets without a problem. Mind you that was only to about 5m, but thats all I need. The film quality isn't excellent but I'm happy with it. Use it more just to see whats down there and don't really care for making fancy you tube vids. I highly recommend it. You could buy 5 for the price of one GoPro so you have spares if you ever decide to send one too deep!

Right now I'm thinking that
Right now I'm thinking that this is the way to go for a video camera! Me and a mate ride down mountain biking trails and really want to get it on a go pro or something similar but I also want to get a camera down to see the schools of bream etc. down below the surface of murkyish water in the swan and canning rivers. Do you need a light for the audiosonic to see rough dark murky water? Ive seen probably a go pro look through the same water at the canning bridge but would you need a light source? Or does it do it on its own?

I used it during the day at the Mt Henry jetty and at the Cracknell Park jetty. The Mt Henry was pretty clear, the video came out pretty good, though there wasn't a great deal of action. The Cracknell Park video was a bit murkier, though you could still see ok and had heaps of baby bream attacking my crab bait. Didn't see any crabs though. Have moved inland now, but am hoping to get out to Kalbarri and send it down in the Murchison there to have a look. Unless theres a heap of silt flowing through the river, you don't really need a light source unless you're planning on going after dark

Thank you so much that's great help. I tried going snorkelling at mount Henry bridge a while ago and couldn't see a thing so wondered if a camera would see anything. Did you see any bream under the jetty? That might be a new location

I saw a couple but not heaps. More blowfish and a few gobble guts or whatever those things are called. The blowies are pretty funny dudes to watch
