Good Fishing session Yeww

Well after a shitty couple of weeks back at university again and trying to get into the swing of another semester, I decided screw uni for the day, the weather was great and missing a few lectures was well worth getting out on the boat with the old man for a bit of a fish or a bit of a crab sesh.

After loading all the gear into the boat and getting down to the water at a lazy 10 am, the Easterly winds were around a 15- 20 knots and dying off/  With the ocean and swell flat as a tack we made the decision to head out wide, which resulted in a pretty interesting result as we found some very decent ground.  After dropping our lines, I had a light line and a heavy line out which was placed in the rod holder, my light line set up started pulling drag and after winding up I could see the outline of a nice size king george whiting, only to have a large grey shadow come out of nowhere behind it.  As it came to the surface the grey shadow which turned out to be a black tip reef shark smashed my king george down for lunch and creayed a water spray which covered me and took my light line of 15 pound for a quick spin before the hook gave way.

Five mins later after being totally stunned, the old mans heavy rod went off peeling drag only to hear the words for F*** sake and it was gone.  Old man put his rod down n while fixing another set up shouts F*** your rod boy.  My (shimano torium 30 loaded with 50lb ) was peeling line off like no tomorow.  I quickly wound up my light gear and the fight was on.

After 15 mins of battling and 3 solid runs a nice 4 ft Black tip reef shark hit the surface and after a quick dispatch and onto the ice, me an the old boy set up the rods again to fish. After a few more drops resulting in some nice whiting and Kg, my torium took another U shaped look and the line was screaming off again.  Just as the southwest wind was starting to really kick up, after another solid 10-15 min battle and getting her to the boat 2 -3 times (realising it was another black tip reef shark,) before absolutely smashing me and making another run for the bottom.  2 grey shadows appear out of nowhere following the shark to the surface and shooting back into the depths (both black tip reef sharks) and on the sounder they were everywhere definately a spot marked in the gps).

The old man gaffed it and we quickly dispatched it and put it on ice. After this the south wester was howling so we decided to call it a day. Here is the result. I have to say for the size of these fish they are incredibly powerful in and out of the water. And some of it was eaten fresh for dinner tonight with fresh garden salad and homemade potato wedges and it was bloody beautiful.

Hope my story didnt bore the brain cheers guys . Back to uni tomorow , but all worth the fun and stress relief.

Must be a few sharks around!

Tue, 2011-03-15 08:40

Must be a few sharks around! Where you guys out deep? We were fishing inside the FFB for whiting yesterday in the morning and I hooked up big on the light gear and lost 250m of line in a blistering run across the surface and just as we started the motor to chase it down my 6lb busted off at the reel! Woulda been a shark I guess. Also got busted off 3 more times while whiting fishing on big hook ups.

Yeah the last 4 times we've been out there we've seen sharks.. few little hammers. How'd you stop the black tips on 2kg?!! I didn't have a chance with the PE1 I had on and max drag on the 2500 Ci4, lost 200m and down to the 6lb backing before it pinged me.

Nice work on the blacktip.

Tue, 2011-03-15 09:13

Nice work on the blacktip. They musnt like what I have been using for bait, get sharks almost every trip this year and so far no black tips!

When asked by a non-fisherman 'how many fishing rods do you really need?' the correct answer is either:

n+1 (where n is the number of fishing rods you currently own); or

n-1 (where n is the number of fishing rods which would cause your significant other to dump you.

I got a feeling it might just be the different areas? Around where I fish I have only gotten one black tip but a heap of little bronzies... But then you hear of some other spots just full of black tips.

Nice catch man, great feed there.

Yeh we headed out into 35 -

Tue, 2011-03-15 09:36

Yeh we headed out into 35 - 40 metres n found a nice lump of coral an sand holes n what not , id say it could have possibly been a shark after it chased my kg down n had it for lunch . Pretty eye opening of how fast they really are. Its like when they hit your baite there going a 100 miles an hour to cuz my line was just peeling of the reel . Awesome fight i loved it. I also think that it taste bloody great as many of you agree , i wouldnt complain if i got these over a few demersals every now n then. cheers guys for the comments

yeh im with goodz , i had

Tue, 2011-03-15 14:39

yeh im with goodz , i had black tip reef sharks pinging me on 50 lb-40lb gear mainly biting through the 80lb leader!. 2 Kilo line with 6 lb leader with a tiny hook would be impossible to gear in as a decent size bream would snap that in no time. Just my Opinion , very impressive if you did manage to get one into the boat on 2 kilo gear.
