Good rod and reel setup
Submitted by Watto069 on Sat, 2008-10-04 10:42
Hi All
I'm looking for a good bottom bouncing setup eg rod and reel. As I have just bought a new boat I don't have much experience in the good quality gear that is avaiable. Can anyone suggest what brands of rods and reels I should be looking at.
Thanks
Brodie

There are heaps of choices,
There are heaps of choices, depending on how much you want to spend.
If you want a good quality Leverdrag reel, you cant go past a shimano torsa.
With rods you have heaps to choose from. Shimano Tcurves, jigwrex. live fibre, daiwa monstermesh, Penn powerstick pro standup game....

Again from me
I have a Saltist 40and I have got over 300m of 50lb braid on it and have pulled in over 130 sambo's jigging, plus many more fish even out at the derwent, I use a black tiger as I like the ugly stick rods, soft enough to not hurt me but stiff enough to even get a 500g jig swimming.
Look at a ugly stick bluewater as they don't make black tigers anymore , I'm after another Black tiger but can't find any second hand one's for sale.
If you are using a Saltist and 50 lb braid you just do up the drag and thats it for the day , I don't know why people play around with their drag for when bottom bouncing, most of the time you just back off to drop it down then push it up to strike drag when you hit bottom , same thing on a star drag only you release the spool then click it into gear when you hit bottom.

L/Drag!
That $$$ can buy ya something good Brodie!
I prefer my leverdrag reels for bottom fishing due to ease of drag adjustment and drag curve. Having a pre-set also helps maintain correct adjustment!
I also prefer 2 speed leverdrag reels. This helps when bringing up big fish off the bottom. The Shimano TLD new models with graphite body makes them light & strong. I use Livefibre also, very nice rod indeed and has a glass top section that reduces high stick snapping. This combo is within that price so check it out!

Exactly
Thats why I like the Black Tiger , that soft tip helps with braid .
The new Ugly stick bluewater is nearly the same.

50? Cripes, even my 30TH
50? Cripes, even my 30TH (660g, 6.4:1) has at least 300yds of 50lb braid on it. If I got to pick again, I'd probably go the 30H (510g, 6.1:1) as I don't think the extra ratio is worth the 150g.

its only about 200g difference
between the 30H and the 50. If that 200g extra isn't going to bother you, then go the 50 and a 1000m spool of braid - you'll need most if not all of it.
If you are going to jig with it, then you want to seriously consider a swap down to the 30H as any extra weight is taxing on the dukes after a day of jigging (particularly sambos). You'll have forearms like popeye.

Good decision...
G'day Brodie...
My take is that it comes down to your budget, depth of water you'll be fishing, and to a lesser degree what you'll be targeting...
For $500-600 you can't go past the quality of the Daiwa Saltist 50 and the soft tip and stopping power of a Live Fibre 15-24kg short stroker.... loaded with 65 pound braid or thereabouts....
I normally fish for at least 6 hours so I don't like heavy gear... the lighter the better (without sacrificing too much strength) - just so you know there are some nice egg beaters that would be good too, but they can be a little more exy I think...
If you're talking bottom bouncing in 100-300m's of water well than that's a different kettle of fish all together... that's were your two speeds would come into their own...I've recently secured a Saltist 50 and love the balance and weight when matched up to the Live Fibre... that was a relatively cheap outfit for me as I picked up the Live Fibre a couple of months ago when BCF had their 15% off sale (off Live Fibre rods);
Another option is to just be a dickhead like me and buy everything; most toys wins hey! You can never have too many combo's...
cheers,
damo

L/Fibre!
Yeh the 10-15kg is nice, more fun & less pulled hooks Watto. I still do use my Live Fibre 15-24kg however for deepwer water stuff ie 100 plus + where heavier leads are required and still having backbone strength for hook ups & power when required!

me!
As Huggy mentioned, i use a Penn 16VSX, nice reel for $899 but you can get something good around the $500 mark that will work well like the Okuma TG30 2 speed ...other options also available!

The saltists are quite
The saltists are quite popular reels and for good reason, so I think you'll be happy with your choice.
What was your reason for going the 50 over the 30 watto?I was looking at saltists a while ago, and from memory the 30's put out about 20lb of drag max (maybe a little less in practice). The good thing with that is that if you are using 50lb, you can play around with the drag without worrying too much (say if you are trolling). I leave mine about midway, but know if I get a big fish I can keep cranking it up until its really tight without having to worry. I ended up getting the saltists 'big' brother which is lighter than the saltist (or torium I had before) and paired it with a lighter rod and the new combo is much nicer to use than the previous heavier one. I tend to use an even lighter combo lately though :p
