Gopro Flasher

I made up this flasher last week to have a Gopro mounted on it to see what sort of ground i was fishing on. The idea being i could bring it back up to the surface, use the wifi to view the footage on an ipad and pretty much get a live feed on what sort of ground i was fishing on and what was around. I took it out on Friday and trialled it out on the blades off of Bunbury and was pretty pleased in how it went. I made a few modifications to it on Saturday and took it back out on Sunday at a different spot and seemed to perform really well. We actually caught 3 Sambos within 10m of the flasher, so that side of things seemed to work spot on. I havent gone through all the footage from Sundays fish yet but from the first quick look i have had i saw King George and Pinkies swimming around, along with the sambos circling it.

I'll put some photos up of the flasher (before i made the mods to it) and some snaps from out on the blades, if anyone is interested.

 I'd be carefull using it

Mon, 2015-07-06 17:14

I'd be carefull using it around coral like that as when we dive on country like that we have found it's not uncommon to find sinkers that have been cut off.

I have got a drop camera and I hang the weight about a metre below the camera on a light piece of mono so hopefully I only lose the sinker if things go wrong.

I have got a red filter for Gopro you can have for free if interested.

I actually did have a weight

Mon, 2015-07-06 19:18

I actually did have a weight connected about 1500mm below the flasher on 5kg line for that exact reason as we dive it as well and have found a fair bit of lead left behind. The problem I had was with the swell that was running the weight I had below the flasher wasn't heavy enough so I couldn't feel it hit the bottom before the flasher did (Hence why the shots are near the bottom) I have rectified by adding some floatation above the flasher to help with buoyancy and of course a slightly heavier weight, seemed to work much better.

Quick Video

Fri, 2015-07-10 07:42

I just put together a quick video of the footage from the second time i took the flasher out after a few modifications. The water isnt as clear as it was when i took it to the blades but all in all i am  pretty happy with the result. I have tweaked it a little more and might try the red lense on it and take it out again on the weekend.

MKIII completed

Fri, 2015-07-10 11:06

I have completed my modifications to the gopro flasher and put some photos of it up above at the start of the thread. I have tested the bouyancy in a rainwater tank and looks spot on (will change once it goes in the ocean but should only make it better)

Just have to get out and put it into practice now

As has been said

If you hang a burly bomb of the bottom of the camera at your favourite fishing place it might have some very interesting video for you to analyse.

Thanks for posting the vid a few surprises with what showed up. I presume that the bit of polly pipe had some burly in it a bit surprised that no rays showed up for a feed.

 The water was actually very

Fri, 2015-07-17 07:11

The water was actually very clear. It was very interesting watching all the footage because as you would have seen the water was clear and not much movement but as soon as the wind swung from E/SE to N/NE the water changed instantly and got very ground swelly and dirty with little bits of broken weed and silt. As soon as this happened the fish disappeared, almost as if a light switch was flicked. I am going to look at the tides for the day as well and see if there is a correlation with that as well, but it was a distinct change with the water conditions under the surface and a distinct chnage in fish behaviour.

The polly pipe had some diced

Fri, 2015-07-17 07:17

The polly pipe had some diced mulies in it along with my weight to hold the flasher. Unfortunately the occy at the end thought he would like it more than i would and walked it across the ocean floor back to his home. It was a fairly decent effort because not only did it carry the weighted burley bucket and flasher with camera - it is also attached to a marker bouy on the surface that it would have had to tow as well. I only had 8kg line on that section incase something was to happen with it getting stuck - luckliy. I got my camera back with some awesome footage and he got my burley bucket - i guess win/win some would say ha ha
