GoPro Question
Submitted by crasny1 on Tue, 2013-06-18 14:07
I am a definate novice with some technology. Since I am certainly not one of the photo posters on here because I forget to do it, and get back fishing. But now have installed a GoPro on the boat, and have fun so far with the video.
Question for this almost geriatric techno dumbo is how do you get stills from the video so at least I can post some pics on here. I seem to want to show off to the video. Nothing flash yet as I come to grips with SW fishing again after 6yrs in the Pilbara.
I told you I was techno dumb!!!!

Yep VLC is good for this.
Yep VLC is good for this. Better photo the higher quality the video obviously. But all I do is pause where I want to take the snapshot of then select 'Video' on the top toolbar then 'Take Snapshot'.
In this report I posted the last pic of my mate casting was a Snapshot taken from my GoPro2 Video on 1080HD using VLC.

Without knowing my 1st question are you using VLC? If so that should cancel out any codec issues. 2nd is where did you purchase your sd card from? If cheapy on ebay that could be your problem? Again without knowing the specs of your laptop it could be your graphics card or worse your CPU isn't up to the job.
Alternatively try the gopro forums

I have a cheaper version, a digitech. my question is how do I use VCL or a similar program to rotate the video (mine is mounted upside down, and therefore so is the resulting video!)

cransy1 is VLC, screen shot etc.. foreign to you? If so ring me on 0432876357 and I'll try to talk you thru it. Have your computer up & running and be playing the gopro footage you want to take stills from.

Thank you so much for the offer
Will remember it if I have trouble. I am not aware of VLC, but screen shot no worries. I thought a screen shot wouldnt save the file as a jpeg etc. Otherwise I will try when I am back South in about 10 days. Up working in Kcity for my last stint, then permanently down in Mandurah. GoPro is down there but if I stuggle will certainly "cry" for help.
Fantastic offer and it is what this forum is about.
EDIT: OK looked up VLC. I have only been using Windows Media Player. Shiite Im primitive. Will download this tonight.

I am, as I've said, merely competent. But in an age of incompetence, that makes me extraordinary.

Hi I use a gopro on a pole to take underwater footage, so it's upside down. But on the gopro it has a setting that let's you record upside down so it looks ok when you play it back.

Which would be handy if you had a gopro but I thought you use a digitech and had upside down footage you wanted right way up?

or use iMovie instead of VLC
or use iMovie instead of VLC if on mac. very easy to use.
One tip is: Never save videos to your laptop with gopro
1 year of owning a gopro took EVERY bit of memory out of my MacBook Pro..
