GPS Apps?
Submitted by milsey on Wed, 2011-06-15 12:20
I was wondering who uses there iphone or any smartphone as a GPS, I was having a look awhile ago at getting the navionics app however a new release was a few weeks away and now it’s been out for a couple of months i thought i would see if anyone has been using it or any other mapping App for that matter. I’ve got memory map which is ok but it’s very slow and the maps themselves aren’t that special. I know none are going to be as powerful as a standalone GPS but as a back up or a cheap GPS for the dinghy it could be worth looking at.
Thanks

I had
Navionics on my Android before I killed it, thought it was great and the other guys I know that have it rate it highly.

wanted to know the same thing
was going to get navionics charts app for the iphone4 but there is a new version out that is not getting good reports . The comments say the app keeps crashing / locking there phones . Don't want this to happen but like the idea of the app as a backup gps/navigation. not sure what to do !

Ahh thats a different one again to what I have.
My old iphone has navionics australia v 5.0.4 and my newer android phone has same, but it says v 5.3.1. Both of which have been fine, although the iphone version has beena little more stable.

Paul sounds like were in the
Paul sounds like were in the same boat, till the v 5.0.4 is the old one, so far ive read a few negative things about the new one there is also a one for oceania which is only $17.99 which is much cheaper than the Aus & Africa version which is $45.99 but im not sure if its just the map coverage that is the difference between the two. This is the new one http://itunes.apple.com/au/app/marine-australasia-africa/id382811746?mt=8 and this is the oceania version http://itunes.apple.com/au/app/marine-oceania/id442701929?mt=8

Australia&Africa version 1.3
Yep its good as a back up and if your sitting in the lounge room when the missus is watching dancing with the stars or something similar you can muck around and plan your next outing.
This version was only $17 and the latest update ( two days ago) has sped it up for sure and ironed out a few problems (freezing up).
I know I wont be going to Africa anytime soon so Im not sure why that stapled these two together.
