Great Day out in the South West
With the boat out of action for a couple of weeks I was lucky enough to jump on board with Harro yesterday for a fish. The day started by catching a few herring for bait. Once we had enough bait we were on our way to try and find some bottom fish. As we were rounding the cape we went past what I think is the Young Endevour.
After a short trip we reached our first destination. Conditions were not the best with an eastly wind and a strong current running but Seb managed to land a nice dhuy.
After a few more drifts and not much luck Harro decided to have a look at some ground further south. Once we reached the ground the conditions had improved heaps. With a bit of searching around, managed to find a couple of dhuys on the sounder. Down went the lines and within a few minutes I was on to something solid and just a short time after that Harro was on as well. Minutes later we had two identical dhuys on board. Harros was in better shape, so it was released and mine was kept.
After reaching our dhuy boat limited we decided to try and target some pinkies. The boys down sized their rigs and I chucked on a jig. We headed out a bit further and found a nice flare up on the sounder. Down went my jig and after 5 or so jigs the rod loaded up and I was on to something solid again. First called it for a sambo because it hit the jig 10m off the bottom and went hard but after several minutes fighting it I realised it was probable another dhuy and that it was. Stoked first demersal on a jig and it was a cracker.
The jig was a Shout - Stay in what I now call the wrasse colour (red and gold). After a quick snap the fish was released. No release weight was needed as the fish was in excellent condition (maybe becuase it was caught on light tackle and not skulled dragged up). After a couple more drifts we had bagged out on demerals. I managed my second demersal on a jig, a PB nanni of 58cm.
Thanks Harro for an awsome day. Its good to let someone else do the skippering for a change. Managed to achieve one of my goals for this year in getting a demersal on a jig.
Cheers
Brendan

I would love to fish down that neck of the woods one day. Looks like there must be some great ground around there.

hi there, that tallship looks like the leuwin (not sure of spelling) - lovely boat all the same - and looked like a good catch for a days fishing.

Hopefuls
Good report and some top fish to take home.
Looks to be plenty of salmon hopefuls on the rocks near the Quarries behind the sailing ship.

happy days
was on my boat damo, brendans is getting some love atm, was good having him on board, we usually fish together anyway, but its always good to have a day off from skippering, i think i only had 2 drops, both resulting in good fish( 1 dhuie & 1 red), i enjoy puttin the boys onto the fish sometimes its better than catching them, great crew and a cple of good deckies, great photos brendan, ur swaying me onto the jigs mate!!, sunday we,ll try them out in the 120,s bring it on!!glad we managed a cple of personal PB,s happy days
was also good to go to different grounds , that I havent been to in over a yr or so, it was perfect conditions and the fish were hungry, we deffo picked the day mate, small swell light winds, and i,m glad the bycatch of dhuies went back strong,
cheers

Thanks guys. I was pretty
Thanks guys. I was pretty excited when the dhuy hit the jig, have been trying for a while now. I was trying a slightly different action on the jigs and it seemed to be working. One small jig than one large one that puts slack in the line and allowed the jig to flutter down a bit. Repeated this a few times to the jig was about 15m off the bottom. Both fish took the jig while there was slack in the line and a quite a way off the bottom(if that makes sence). Dont know if thats the correct style but it was working on the day.
Feral the new jigging combo was great. The Talica 10 and 150 JM Powerspell is perfect for the jigs I was using. Nice and light but heaps of stopping power.
Jigging is great fun when it comes together, real exciting stuff. Will be in Exmouth in 5 weeks and hanging to give it a go up there.
