They sound creepy but are actually companies like Google crawling thru all the online data to be used by search engines etc.
Adam probably knows more about this.

it does sound creepy and some
it does sound creepy and some of it is kinda scary but you'd be surprised (or not), many people don't realise how much stuff is collected every time you go on the net or use an app. - particularly those with smart phones.
Free app - pretty well guaranteed if you use a free app data is being collected and sold to a third party (how they make their money).
I know someone that was talking to his son on Skype, mentioned Bali in conversation and presto a popup advertising a Bali trip comes up while he's chatting.
Before long you will be doing something on the computer with the webcam turned off (or so you think)and take a swig of brand x beer and then up pops an add for a special on brand x at the local bottle shop.

when you purchase apps and
when you purchase apps and other things with a user agreement (those long things we never read and just tick agree at the bottom) we actually give them permission to collect the data in amongst all that, most of its pretty harmless but now and then you can get one that is more harmful.
Think of your computer and the web as the human body - covered in bacteria - most of its either harmless or even beneficial. But we get the odd bacteria that causes trouble

It's actually a bit scary. A former detective came to school to give a speech to us year 8's about cyber safety. He said if you post a picture on fb and it says your going to a particular shopping centre, it will try to sell the data to the owners of the centre and then already your what you think private info is on the web.

Your right Lachie but remember nothing posted on facebook is private - trust me.
Even if you have the most secure privacy settings people who know how can get info you post thinking only friends you allow can see.
The other thing is facebook keep changing their privacy settings and if your not on the ball and keeping up you'll suddenly find your info accessible to all.
Data embedded in photos etc. can also give info (including GPS data) on your location.
