Hi Guys,
Iam heading down to Hamelin Bay for Australia day and was wondering what i should be Targeting off the beach. I havent done alot of beach fishing especially down south so i dont know what fish i should be going for. I will have my 5 year old son with me so i want to impress. Your thoughts would be apprecieated.

4X4?
Do you have a 4x4 to travel to the northern end of the beach?
It is possible to catch herring , silver bream, whiting and the odd salmon early in the season from near the boat ramp but better and more fish are caught from the gutters that form from two rocks in the middle of the bay up to the Boranup end and to get there a 4x4 is needed.

Thanks. Unfortunatly i no longer have a 4x4 :(
So you think my best option is near the boat ramp then. Any thing else you could tell me, as in what bait i should use etc
cheers

Bait
The usual bait, whitebait, prawns and squid for herring, whiting etc and mulies and metal lures for tailor and salmon.
Salmon have been know to appear there early in the season so don't be surprised if you get one.

If you have 2 setups
Use a flicky to fish for the bread and butter stuff and then also use a bigger set rod with a mulie or fresh fillet/fish. I use the float/foam from a berley cage tied just above the gang or (preferred)snell that holds the bait to keep it up a little (any foam will do, I just used those). Less trouble with stingrays and crabs eating your set rig. Make sure the drag is loose or you will loose a rig like me when I forgot and the lot got dragged into the Ocean there. Not happy Jan as I was a poor student and just bought a beautiful Mitchell (the ones without a bail arm) that I never saw again.

As Car--ite said above
The spots he mentioned is spot on. But if no 4x4 or lazy the same species can be caught right infront, ie near the ramp. I found the section heading towards the "tip" (the closest spot to Hamelin Island -Just Google Earth this and you will see)has a greater success rate than very near the jetty. You cant 4x4 there as that direction is closed for offroad (this might have changed as I haven't been down there since before going to Kcity 8yrs ago)but it isn't a long walk. Once you get to the rocks just fish thereabouts.
With a 4x4 there is a little reef close to shore about 2k up north. You will see the rocks as I think it is the first rocks after the beach. Drive to the northern end andfish off the rocks close to the end. There is a nice gutter there and have caught some soapies aswell as the fish mentioned above, and tailor also show up but I only ever get them at dawn or dusk. Never stayed late but I am sure you should get bigger soapies, ie legal Mullaway at night.
Since it has been years I am sure others will assist but my 2 cents worth.

Go the Herring!
If you are content with herring a blob with a burley hole and some burley. prawns or anything for bait and the Herring will
come to you...really if you ant bigger stuff walkiing to the rock ledge/ gutter to the Nortyh could be the go.

Look to the north from the boat ramp you will see the first bend about 700m up the beach or so. there is some rocks/ reef right on the shore line. Best bet, walk to those and fish from them. Swell should be down this time of year so shouldnt have much wave action.
Bit of burley will see you get some Herring, Tarwine, skippy and sand whiting. Evening may see a tailor or 2, soapy mullaway at night at times and even the odd shark, however using bigger baits does account for a lot of stingrays as they are frindly residents. You will see a lot of them.
2nd option, walk to the south of the rocks to the edge of the rocks / cliff (End of the sandy beach bit) herring, skippy, the odd Flattie are caught there, burley and a float or small sinker and hook in the sand will get you them.
From my perspective the boat ramp is pretty baron, even for herring. The reef right in front may look inviting but its dead, not even a cray lives on it.
You can walk over the cliffs to the 'back beach' of Hamelin, same deal you will see a path down onto the sand, and just fish almost right in front of it in the sand holes, herring, skippy, and more likely to find a Salmon there than round on the beach. Resident salmon generally hold up in the more reefy areas.
Hope this helps

Not to far away
is Cosy Corner. Off the Rocks there to the north of the Beach heaps of Bull herring and also some decent skippy. Burley berley and they will come.
The beach area is for the usual suspects and watch out for dark salmon schools as they can come through there, but a little soon IMO.
