He's saying only get 5w
If you look closely, he's saying don't go .5w (ie. 0.5w), or 1w or 2w. Their range is too short to be useful.

What exactly are you trying to achieve with the handhelds? What distance over what terrain?

I just brought two sets of two watts Uniden handhelds or site. Not sure how they will go but got a pretty good deal from jb hifi in Mandurah forum as they have only recently opened. Got $20 cheaper than the lowest internet price I seen.

All sorts Starbug, I live
All sorts Starbug, I live down south so undulating bush, I'lll take it out in the dingi most likely also. Prospecting up north. Basically the better they are the more we'll use them. If they are crap like the ones i have now they will also collect dust.
I hear that Wouxun are pretty bullet proof and are a good brand?

Been wearing mine now for
Been wearing mine now for the last two weeks daily and they aren't to bad. I am mainly using mine within a 500 meter radius from each other so 2 watt is fine. One thing I have notice with the Motorola is that they are big and heavy and would annoy the hell out of me.

So long as the unit you buy
So long as the unit you buy is 5w, it will perform pretty much the same as the next brand 5w unit. You could look into which units allow you to plug in an external antenna, this will give you the extra range you are seeking & you can buy a couple of different antenna to suit the terrain you are in. 5w is the most powerfull unit you can get. It is actually illegal to transmit more than 5w from a handheld unit so signal boosters etc are out of the question. If you're in a spot that you think you're a chance of hitting a repeater, then use the repeater channel. Otherwise a 5w unit with an extenal ariel is the best you can do.

Whitworths are doing 15% off next week, Friday and Saturday, personal shoppers only. Going to go and have a look at the Standard Horizons HX870 VHF handheld.
