Harvey Estuary Boat Ramps

 Hi All

I'm hoping some of the members on here can help me out. The company that I work for is completing a planning study on the two boat ramps on the eastern shoreline of the Harvey Estuary. The boat ramps are on Heron Point Road and Birch Drive.  I am interested to know if anyone on here uses those ramps, and if so, where they travel from to use them and how busy they get?

There are obvious issues with the ramps (such as water depth) but ultimately we are trying to determine if there is any justification for significant upgrades. Hopefully some  of the users will have a view on this.  Feel free to provide any other comments that you have - any information is appreciated.

thanks

Have used Birchmont.  Same as Heron point though and is very shallow.  I travel from Singleton/golden bay area.  Rarely see anyone at birchmont but heron point is busy during crabbing season.

I live in Parkridge, Bouvard, as spit away from the Parkridge/Bouvard ramp.
During crabbing season this can get very packed. Have spoken to a few people and some are from the east side, ie Waroona, Harvey etc, but cant get in on the 2 Ramps mentioned, due to depth.
Even Bouvard on a low tide is shallow, and we might struggle with our 5.4m boat, despite last winters (2015)dredging.
So despite them being a little out of the way for Mandurah users, they certainly would be used by people on the East side of the Estuary.
But personally that part of the estuary is shallow anyway, and would be restricted to tinny use mostly.
I am personally all in favour of upgrades, especially the Herron Point ramp. This is easily reached from the Forrest Hwy, and might even be easier to use if upgraded for people coming from Perth as it is a direct route down the freeway.

I think Point Grey Marina was approved about 2 years ago but the developer hasn't done anything with yet.

CD - are you able to shed any light on this?

cd

i like to use the herron point rd ramp , it is closer to bunbury up forrest highway and easy to access, herron point road does need to be deepr though , with some work done on the ramp , making it a dual berth would be good ,

the parkdale one i use as well but it can be busier with wait times and lack of parking etc when its busy there

any upgrades would be very welcome imo

And have you ever been stuck in the "loop" traffic jam when people are coming in, others going out.
That little turn around loop fills up with people waiting to go out, and then boats coming in with right off way block the jetties, BUT cant get their trailors through because everyone is lining up in the Loop to go out.
Needs calm heads and a "director" to fix this mess, which happens regularly when its busy.

Use the Heron pt ramp

Thu, 2016-12-08 10:49

I use the Heron Pt boat ramp and tow the boat down Forest Highway from perth (South of river).

Don't go too often but the carpark can get pretty full on weekends during crab season.

Have looked at the Birchmont ramp last season and it looked shallower than Herron Pt so gave it a miss and havent been back to that one.

Same as hezzy I use heron pt coming up from bunno it is very shallow even to launch a 4 m dingy most days pull my 2 kids out for 100 m or so before enough water to drive out the rest of the way .A side by side in /out ramp addition would be much apreciated .

Thanks very much for all the info so far everyone. Please keep it coming.

The ramps are certainly convenient along Forrest Highway so I agree an upgrade would be great.

in terms of Point Grey marina, I haven't been involved in the project, but my understanding is that the current market conditions make it a marginal project. Probably need the market to turn before it goes ahead.

yeah use the Herron point ramp, probably every second week in summer. Very shallow, usually have to walk the tinnie out. Upgrade / Dredge would be great. Drive up from Australind
