Id like to know if their R&D department is as well funded as their Media department.
they will surely need to hire some more Wordsmiths for the next Etec vid as they used EVERY superlative in the english language already in the last vid!
A 2 stroke is capable to make more power than a 4 stroke as the name sugests (2 stroke, down & up = BANG, 4 stroke needs down, up to clear it's guts, down to fill it's gut then up, compression =Bang)
2 stroke uses more fuel and oil to lubricate.
4 stroke needs more moving parts and needs regular sump oil replacements to keep lubricating all moving engine parts,
A lot of people forget this expense as being part of the running costs of a 4 stroke
A 2 stroke is easier/simpler to make and maintain in that regards than a 4 stroke.
Due to the oil burn nessesary for crankbearing, piston/ring lubrication and the "Polution" of this, the world has turned it's back to the 2 stroke engine cofiguration.
Sump oil for the 4 banger? 5 lt every 100 hours, 20lt drum from Chivers, $200 (10w 30). 20lt of XD 100, upwards of $250 for 20 lt that the 2 banger burns. I had a 250 etec on a 680 haines and it went through the oil like a 2 stroke would - totally blew the 300 hour service interval saving cost out the window.
Good motor though, heaps of power and no problems other than the oil!
Brought a 4 stroke mower , 6 yrs ago , keep the oil up thats it ..starts first time everytime . 2 strokes are a PITA . Friggen whipper snippers as soon as they play up , just buy a newie not worth messing around with imo ..2 strokes need regular attention being the slack jack I am ..4 strokes suit me more
Work harder (operate 2 brooms,) instead of just one, at the same time, and ask your supervisor politly for a wage increrase or work smarter to be able to buy just one.
thats some impressive collection you have there Did you restore them?
But, I (and most Id wager) dont have an outboard cause we like to collect them or remember the old days, to do that just 15 minutes at the ramp watching the old carby 2 strokes starting up (or otherwise) is more than enough to cure any vestige of nostalgia
I can honestly say that my renewed interest in owning a boat came about after picking up a 4 stroke Yam a few years back and seeing the difference.
To me (as an engineer) an EFI two stroke is a bit like a turbine powered bi-plane, theres not much further to go with them hence why BRP are also developing and building 4 strokes for their various machines.
Thats not to say that Etecs dont perform as they say, just that it may not be along way til a change of strategy is in order for BRP?
And I have a "few" more 2 stroke motorbikes together with a "few" old farm engines and tractors and an old Aussie car.
I like the "Old" gear.
Better not wager;
I happen to have 4, 2 stroke outboards, one being a 1978 140HP 6 cilinder, made in Victoria under licence Mercury that I spotted as bulk rubbish scrap but complete in bits and restored back to as new.
It was a great project and the outboard did not need any big mechanical parts as it was used for decades on lake Arqyle so no corrosion.
It still, after all these years goes hard and loves fuel and oil! but the sound!!!! & speed!!!
but Id still wager. Your not saying that people like Etecs cos they like the "old" gear are you, cos Im not sure what your getting at?
Id wager that >90% of fishos with reasonable sized boats like a modern outboard and all the benefits that go with it, just like people dont restore tractors to actually go farming with?
I've had standard 2 strokes, 4 stroke and Optimax outboards. Current reef boat has a 200 Opti. Given the choice I'd go 4 stroke in the larger motors just for the quiet operation without the smell. For the little creek boat I'd stick with the dirty standard 2 stroke. Light, reliable and cheap to run and service.

Load of sales hype
I was just looking at some photos the other day of some big end shells imbedded in the top of a piston from a 200 up etec with 600 hrs on the clock

Better stick with the etec
Better stick with the etec then. I'm not sure I could use 60 knots.

Because they (2 strokes)
Because they (2 strokes) wear out quicker and cost more in fuel to run.

Not nessecarily true.It
Not nessecarily true the wear out faster.
Yes they use more fuel but you cannot make HP out of fresh air with a combustion type engine.
It depends on how much power/revs you want to pull out of them.
In olden days of GP MC racing, a piston ring set would last max a race meet or just practice/Qual. and a new set for the race.
You still see the Apollo design Jhonno's on the back of boats who have been there since the 197ish!

anyone with an old
anyone with an old whippersnipper can tell you why 2 strokes arent that popular!
They certainly are very popular especially in the US, but I reckon BRP even know that is pretty close to the pinnacle of 2 stroke developement.
Question I have is, if they are simpler with less parts, why arent they cheaper and significantly lighter than modern 4 strokes?

I like the "old" 2 strokes bikes and do collect/restore them just for fun to remember the good old days of GP racing
And sometimes take them to the track to have a serious blast.

i have a 200 etec brought
i have a 200 etec brought brand new nearly 2 years ago, done 380hrs with no real issues, couple of small minor probs.
i love it, but that said...my next boat will be a 4 bangger for sure!!!
im with lastchance, the oil usage and cost will out way the service on the 4 stroke, unless you dont use your boat alot.
it was ok when i was getting super cheap xd100 oil, but now im paying full price and im noticing it...
$70 for 3.9ltrs, thats basically 4 days of fishing for me.
cheers
