Submitted by MOBIESDICK on Sun, 2012-03-25 19:38
Hi gents, bought my first boat friday and am keen to hook the hds to the engine, i know you can do it two ways but im not sure if mine is done already as my hds appears to have something hooked to the network but i dont know what.
I have included some pictures of the gear.
Any help would be great.

Ive been studying the back of the unit and found the connection to the back of the nmea2000 port goes directly to the gps antenna on the roof. Now after some online research, ive concluded that the person who installed this unit has NOT installed a Nmea2000 starter kit on the hds, instead connecting the antenna directly to the hds. i notice there is no termination resistor either. so am i right in saying this is WRONG and the antenna wont be working correctly? therefore i need a starter kit, yamaha nmea2000 to command link cable???
Really struggling with this at the moment. might just rip the lot out and toss it.

Yep,
Definately need a powered backbone to connect all the network devices to.
And I'd say the GPS antenna won't be working properly either (if at all) - as far as I know, all NMEA2k bus devices take their power from the backbone - and wouldn't have thought the HDS would be supplying power via the network port........
I'd almost bet my left nut that the HDS is still using it's internal GPS, and the external antenna is just sitting there looking nice.
Install the backbone (making sure you have male / female terminating resistors on either end), and connect all other devices into it using the T-connectors - should have no problems then.
EDIT : I just looked at your photo again and remembered thinking WTF when you first posted and I saw the T connector plugged into the HDS - your recent discovery makes sense now....... so yes, WTF !?!

I think the guy who owned the boat had TOO MUCH CASH!!! it as all the goodies and only 105hrs use. boat was finished in sept 09 and engine is 2010 F200 makes sense he has hooked it up wrong. Im in the process of fixing up the wiring and doing all the things that should be done to an elect system, and investing in some duralac also.
Sweet so now i can order my interface cable for the command link, fuel flow probe and starter kit, i just didnt want to order the kit if i didnt need it.
Thanks mate!

Fuel flow
Hey MD you probably dont need the EP60R fuel flow sensor as the engine ECM will pass on that info via the engine interface .
I have one on my new f115 and it reads the same as the yammi fuel management gauge except when idleing because it doesnt use enough
fuel to register.
Where are you buying the interface cable from ?

I've researched a lot and found a seller on fleabay.
Yamaha interface $89.40 del
Nmea2k starter kit $77 del
wont bother with fuel sensor then. can you recommend any MUST HAVE add ons for the HDS 10?
thanks

Here is a list of the accessories I found on the lei site .The only reason I have the fuel flow sensor was for my previous 2 stroke johno.
As for must haves - the biggest tranny your sounder will allow seems to be the advice from most on this site.

Given the previous owners
Given the previous owners ability I'm guessing it's a 50/200

Im pretty keen on a structure scan, but do they work with gen 1 HDS 10 units? to be honest i have to learn how to use a sounder and interpret it as ive never had one before.

Yes, definately what
Yes, definately what greasemonky said - the new Yammy will provide all fuel data via the engine interface - far superior to the fuel flow, and no additional installation requirements.
Didn't realise it was a new Yammy - For some reason I thought you were the same guy who asked about hooking up the interface to an older Saltwater Series Yammy.
