Head torches

Gday i was wondering if someone could point me in the right direction fro getting myself a head torch. Are the expensive ones worth the $ or do i get a cheapy? If so where do i get one? I am looking to get one for this weekends overnighter.

Any advice would be great and thanks in anticipation

Graham

Torches

Wed, 2010-12-01 06:18

Graham I've bought a couple of the 'cheaper' models of head torches over the years and they do work well but tended to fail reasonably quickly. I then spent the money and bought a 'LED Lenser' head torch and kicked myself I didn't do it earlier. Great illumination and takes AAA batteries so I've got a few rechargables in the case. The switch is underneath so if it gets wet the water has more chance of running off instead of entering the light through the switch mechanism. Can't fault it so far and I've had it for three and a half years.

I paid close to $100.00 and it is the best thing I have ever done for night fishing. there are heaps of high end ones, I reckon anything over the 80 mark will be the goods. I went through about 6 cheapies before...all failed.

If you order one, maybe order one for Sherbie too - its a hard choice between the cute froggie or cute monkey though...or get both!

dont buy a cheap head lamp

Wed, 2010-12-01 07:17

dont buy a cheap head lamp mate it will be the worst thing you could do . what is the point in a headlamp that will probably let you down in the dark.... although they do look great on the dash of the car lol. the amount of customers i get saying they wish they never brought a cheapie because they have failed to work or broke is ridiculouse.

there are 2 brands i would strongly recomend as  have never seen a return in the 6 years i have been in the tackle industry.

led lensor  and petzl to me would be the brands i would steer towards as the are reliable ,strong, bright and efficient.

i personally use the led lensor with the recharchable system and boy does it make the "bright cheapys" look dull.

they also arnt neccesarilly expensive either especialy with the revolution range of led lensors.

Prisim Reflector System

60 Lumens (Light Output) 2.7 Watt

High intensity LED white beam Light

Hinged attachment to position beam

Adjustable elastic straps

249 Feet effective Distance

34 Hours Battery Life (3) AAA Batteries (Included)

Coast Lifetime Warranty .

at the end of the day im not going to say all cheapys are crap cause you do find the odd good one but the way i look at it is buy it once and do it properly the first time and it will save you money in the long run.

hope this helps

VB3 2220 LED Flashlight
The VB3 2220 LED Flashlight has dual super bright white LEDs that may never need replacing and provide over 100 hours of battery burn time. Light turns on when the head is flipped up. It also pivots to a full 180° for aiming light where you need it. The built-in clip attaches to surfaces up to 1/2" thick. 2 CR2032 3V Lithium coin cells are included.

i have one of these and it clips onto hats, shirts, jackets etc, around $34 off the net and with a lifetime warranty. best one i have seen by far and more versatile....very bright.

I also use the Led Lensor

Wed, 2010-12-01 10:34

I also use the Led Lensor headlight and it is the best light I have ever seen or used. It is brighter than my hand held spotlight, and also brighter than a mag light torch. I use the recharchable one like Brenz, and its worth every cent. If you use it on full power continuously it would last aprox 2.5hrs to 3hrs before it would start to dull slightly, but if you use it on low power which is still brighter than the average light it goes for ages. I've used mine for five or six all night trips ( over 50hrs of fishing) on low or when needed ( Its not on continuously)and only use the brighter light for landing fish etc and still not looking like going flat. Then you just charge it up. .....Brilliant.

Danny.

Hey Graham i reckon the Black Diamonds are a great brand. I have the Spot and the Icon. Have had the Spot for 5 years and the Icon for 4 years. These things have followed me everywhere in that time, even on trips away overseas in very very wet jungles ;)

Absolutly awesome have never missed a beat. Used to sell these things and i reckon as the other blokes have said you cant go wrong with a good quality Petzl, Black Diamond or LED Lenser.

Enjoy it, you'll never go back to hand torches.

Buy a Led Lensor - You'll never go back!

Wed, 2010-12-01 16:27

Hope the Black Diamond is as good as the Led Lensor for you GrahamM.

But for others looking at buying a headlamp

Like a few others have commented - I bought a Led Lensor H7R as well.  You can get the H7 but the H7R is the rechargeable version which is pretty handy I reckon.  You can still put normal AAA bateries in them if you do run out of juice but I've never had to. They are a quality German made product.  I also bought a Led Lensor P7 tactical torch which kicks arse as well.  I have had both of them for over 2 years now and highly recommend them.

I seriously could not believe how bright it was when I first turned it on.   Like Daniel said - It is brighter than a lot of spotlights.   When we went Marroning down out Logue Brook last season, my mate thought I was pointing a hand help spot at him it was that bright.  He was about 100m away.  I reckon it can light up a small area over 200m away.

One tip about buying a headlamp is - Make sure you get one with a seperate battery holder.  I tried a few different cheaper models before I got my Led Lensor and having the battery holder seperate to where the lamp is makes it 10 x more comfy to wear.  Trust me - make sure you try one with a seperate holder before you buy one.

look at the fenix

Wed, 2010-12-01 17:34

look at the fenix hp-10

takes 4 aa's and is water proof down to 5mtrs for 30 mins......also has about 4 or 5 brightness settings up to 225 lumens.....i bought this because trying to recharge 3 batterys is bluddy hopeless....only downside is it doesnt have a flood beam adjuster and youll need to buy a diffuser for a spread beam light source........only negative of this lamp

i have one and is better the the led lenser imho.........yes a belt battery pack is lighter and is also a pita generally.........i had a battery pack and it aint worth the trouble but thats a personal thing

led lesner and and fenix hp 10 are pick of the bunch......both have regulated light source and are well made....cant comment on other brands as i never looked at them

wotever u get makes sure it has cree led's.....anything else is crap

499 - Never heard of those

Wed, 2010-12-01 18:00

499 - Never heard of those when I was looking?  Sounds like a goer though.  Just to clarify the battery holder comments.  The holder on the HR7 is still on the head band but it's on the back.  Not on the light itself.  I've never tried a headlamp with a battery holder seperate to the headband but I would imagine it would be a little inconvenient?

get 1 with a red and white LED

Wed, 2010-12-01 18:26

I use an energiser one that was about $40.  the best thing about it is also has red LED along with white LED so you can switch to night vision and this is particularly handy for moths and bugs.  dont even dream of beach fishing around wedge without a red light the bugs can be unbeleivable.  I have had it a couple of years no problems 3AAA batts and it tilts forward which can be handy when doing fiddly stuff.  I reckon if it needs to be water proof your probably fishing the wrong way lol

I use them at work heaps and the cheaper 10 25 buck jobs arent the best but will last a while although $100 seems alot for a headlamp like sherbs says spend it on beer

Hey Rig.  I've got the same

Wed, 2010-12-01 18:39

Hey Rig.  I've got the same Energiser one as well.  I thought it was pretty good too until I bought the Led Lenser.  It's in a totally different class but the Energiser is still a pretty good headlamp for what you pay for it.  I use to use mine at work a lot too but like I said earlier - wait until you've tried one with a seperate battery holder.  It is way more comfy than the Energiser and a fair bit brighter.  I would consider the Energiser if that's the price range you're considering.  I must admit though - I've got a bit of a thing for torches.  I'd probably spend $300 on a headlamp if it was the best one around!

fair enough

fair enough wazz

I guess the bottom line is having a headlamp is better than no headlamp,

a good tip is dont leave your batteries in them if you arent going to use it for a while, with the added presence of salt the batteries seem more prone to corrosion

Yep.  That's what I was sort of getting at.  My Energiser one was more than capable when I was using it for work.  I don't think I ever used it for camping or fishing though?  That's a good idea about the batteries too.  Cheers.

Led Lenser H7 - 140

Thu, 2010-12-02 19:41

Led Lenser H7 - 140 lumens.  (a standard Dolphin torch is about 65 lumens I believe).

Yes, friggen bright, runs on AAA batteries that last for ages, comfortable, light to wear, adjustable brightness and beam, mine was around $80 a few months ago.

Brilliant light, would strongly recommend.
