hilux

have a hilux and only car I have ever owned........like everything, good/bad but personally I like them. Been all over the WA/NT outback and never had a problem.

my old 93 was bullet proof but upgraded to a turbo and  the turbo helps on the highway....

haven't heard any bad reports about the 2005/2006 model.

got them at work and no problems.

but depending on what you want I would look at a triton. bigger turbo engine and better economy. a good strong car and cheaper than a hilux so with the savings you can add 4*4 accessories, or even better, fishing gear. I would seriously have a look.

plenty of guys will rave about the Navara but I have no experience with current models.

Hi Buz

we love our 1993 hilux duel cab 4x4, it takes us everywhere.  When diesel motor needs rebuilding Bobs going to get it rebored & maybe put a turbo on it.  The only thing with turbo's we been told, they don't like dirt so if going off road for long periods of time, apparently its not good for them, could have been given wrong advise, yes the 2.8 litre towing our 18' fibreglass but loaded with supplies/fuel is a bit slow on the hills  but the old girl can sit on 90-100klm all day other wise. The only annoying thing with her is the snorkel when we first got her but a little bt of adjusting and the snorkel is pretty quite now.   My dream 4x4 is the 7litre F250 turbo charged duel cab grrr.

Dunno about turboing the old

Dunno about turboing the old one, reminds me of when my brother rebuilt the motor in his commode. He then blew the gearbox only to rebuild that and blow the diff. Perhaps all the parts in your car have been dying slowly together and a bit more poke in motor will have some repercussions further down the (drive) train.

the original motor, its only done 200,000 klms  have a while yet, no rust body still very good, gearbox good, do have whine Bob thinks it might be the transfer casing, wheel bearings all ok, it is getting louder, he's going to get his mechanic mate to go through it when next service is due.

im the same as damo. not

im the same as damo. not heard of any bad reports with the 05/06 hilux. i have an 03 and its never let me down so they tend to be very reliable cars. but i'd agree with damo as to look at the triton as an alternative depending on budget as they are also pretty good off road from what ive heard and they are cheaper. again with the navara i've not heard bad things about them either so they too might be an option.

Hilux

Got an 08 Hilux SR5 D4D.  Funny enough, also have a 5.8 Alli.  I love the car, I use it metro and also towing the boat which it does no problem.  Fuel economy is really good in the metro although you do notice the differnece when towing the boat.  I really only tow it to Lanclin and it does that no problem but I did tow to Jurian last year and I thought it was a little under powered for that trip.  It did the trip fine but used about 3 times the fuel and was stiing at about 2200 RPM on 100 and was in 3rd most the time.  Pretty sure the 06 has the same engine.

we've got the 93 duel cab 4x4 hilux (diesel 2.8litre) and tows our one tonne boat (with supplies/120litres of fuel), Bob stays mainly in 5th gear, naturally on hills (some) he'll go down to 3rd gear and we get 8-9klms to the litre, without the boat 9-10klms to the litre sitting on 90klms, him old roadtrain driver, sit on 90klms your not on the pump..   One of the fellas on here might be able to explain more on your fuel useage.
