Corrosion Preventative in Aluminium
Submitted by SamC on Tue, 2009-02-24 15:24
Gday Guys,
A little bit or corrosion is coming through on my tinny as of late.
No watter how much i wash it theres still those little places that don't.
Is there any product on the market that will get rid of the corrosion before its gets too bad? Something that is suitable on aluminium!
Can i buff it down then apply a coat of "something" that will prevent corrosion?
Cheers for any input
Sam

Be sure to keep all lead
Be sure to keep all lead sinkers, brass swivelos etc off the Ally boat. Potentially you will burn a hole though it in short time.

Anodes
Check the anodes on your outboard and replace them if they show corrosion. Also check that there is no metal hooks, swivels, sinkers as stated above specially in the bilge.Another thing to look for is that your electrical system is not earthed through the boat.

John is right. Check the
John is right. Check the electrical system. No.1 mistake is earthing to the hull or connected superstructure. So many manufacturers do it and it's just...lazy. For $5 you can buy a proper insulated earth that isolates the hull and avoids that nasty habit of ali conducting into thin air, or salt water as the case may be...
Aside from that a few products claim to offer protection (amongst them paint of course) but not too sure how effective they are.

Hey sam with the corrosion,
Hey sam with the corrosion, if it is around s/s screws, fittings etc. pull them out and coat the threads with a product called duralac. Its a joining compound for dissimilar metals. Its expensive but it works.
cheers andy
