Ok ,thought I would share my success. Despite trying a puller and levering with a large screwdriver and also getting some penetrene into the join it wouldnt budge. Until I tried a trick Isaw on Youtube. ...ye ol' , knee behind the wheeel trick. lol

I climbed in behind the wheel and pushed out with the legs whilst wacking the the shaft with a hammer ,and the bugger just popped off. Thanks for the offers and input..on to the next stage of my project boat.

I tried the ol hammer on the shaft once... could barely walk for a week.

Jokes aside, the mechanic who subsequently replace my Hydrive helm pump said it’s not a good idea. It somehow collapsed one of the the pistons in the pump.
