It is sliding back before we get to top of the ramp so i cant get the transom straps on could be stretching winch strap which is dynema cord i think rated to 3500kg purchased from marine shop just didnt think it would stretch a ratchet strap as well

BOAT SLIDING

Wed, 2016-07-20 11:06

I used to have a Dynema cord to winch my 22 ft Commodore, same prob, by the time I drove home it had slackend off. Switched back to the strap style & she sits dead in place on the trailer now, no movement whatso ever

it could just be when your connecting the boat to the trailer the back out the boat is still floating and when you drive it out of the water the change of boat angle on the trailer gives you the bit of slack in the winch.you could try winch or drive it on with the trailer a bit more out of the water or pull the boat out a metre or so and take up the slack while its sitting properly on the trailer.

Turnbuckle

Wed, 2016-07-20 11:15

You shouldnt have the full weight of the boat on just the winch anyway. I would strongly suggest you set up a turnbuckle from the bow eye down to the draw bar or at the very least the base of the winch post. That way you are not placing all of the load on the highest point of the winch post (leverage working against your). It will transfer the weight to a much stronger point of the trailer and avoid the rope stretching. Much safer as well in case the winch was to let go for any reason.

Bigger turnbuckle

Wed, 2016-07-20 11:54

I would be grabbing a bigger turnbuckle and a couple of large D-Shackles.

Ive got a few large spare galvanised turnbuckles. You are welcome to one if you aren't far from Stirling. Drop me a PM.

Also, dont attach it to the safety chain. You really want it going around a low point on the trailer.

assuming you were using a decent turnbuckle to start with take care going bigger one, if the last one staitened out their is a reason it had to move that much for the boat to settle on the trailer, upgrading that to one that wont break could mean the eye on the front of your boat is the weekest point.

Sounds like the dyneema rope is taking more weight

Wed, 2016-07-20 17:47

as you drive up the ramp. The rope is then wedging down between the other turns on the winch. Make sure all the lower turns on the winch are wound on under load. Then add the turnbuckle as extra precaution.

Few questions for you.  Once up the ramp can you then winch it the 100mm back up tight on the winch post. Im assuming no.

bunk trailer?

My thoughts are the trailer isnt set up right. I recon where the boat slides back to is the perfect place the boat sits on the trailer. If your straightening turnbuckle hooks theres some serious weight on the the winch post. Not good. Maybe if you can move winch post back the 100mm and see if it still happens. Worth a try.

I agree, trailer bunks sound like they're not quite set up right. Is it all bunks, no rollers on the keel? Are the bunks all carpet or the side bunks that rubber style? I have abunks too and I use a turnbuckle before towing up the ramp and it works perfectly.

Post a Couple of pics so we can see your setup.

heres a couple photos of mine

If the whole length of dyneema isnt on super tight it will always end up doing what yours is doing. Can you try winching it up on the trailer by hand instaed of driving on once to lay it up super tight?
