Help on outboard.

Well as most of you know I was looking for a gear box for my chrysler force 50hp outboard. After a good 3 weeks of searching around Australia, I finally located one in the belmont outboard wreckers( horrible customer service), so i thought great just get em to put it in and off I go. So I had to make an appoinment to send in the boat  2weeks later, telling me it would be done in a weeks time, so no worries, so far so good.

After a week they called saying they will need aother week, so I said no problems, when I went to pick the boat up, they said its all ready to go but they didnt even bother checking it...? they said it wasnt their job? anyone else have any experiences like this? Doesnt end there, being a owner of my first boat I had a few questions that I was wondering about the boat but all I got was blunt answers or go look on the internet. Very unhelpful. I paid 650 to put the gearbox in and on that day itself I took it down to point walter. The motor started fine and then after about two minutes it gave out a loud buzzing noise, so i called the last owner of the boat to be told that the engines overheating, so I went to check, and there is no water running through the motor, not being an expert myself, I have no clue what is going on?, and do I take the boat back to belmont do I not bother and try somewhere else.

P.s anyone that could help and reccommend me to a better boating/outboard outlet ,that'll be great.

Cheers

chivers marine

Chivers Marine always take on the work. They dont mind a bit of extra $$, but thats erelevant when the jobs done right!..OTHERWISE

Any local outboard mechanic will no what to do, its a small industry repeat customers would be a very important part of there business and they should be doing the job right, I have had an outboard mechanic in rockingham just off dixon rd. Its a small business but he doesnt charge an arm and a leg and his work is always upto scratch.

I understand how frustrating it can be but my advise..Find a local outboard mechanic have a good chat to him and give him repeat business and he will look after you!

cheers!

did you know it had a fault when you brought it ....last owner points out you say engine overheats ??? confused , cooked motors don't run too well ... was the $650 for the gearbox as well as installation...get a quote and a compression test and weigh things up I suppose

They are pointless dickheads

They are pointless dickheads in there.

Made the mistake of trying to buy some parts off them once, it was easier to buy o/s and take it to a decent mechanic.

I called the owner asking

Thu, 2012-04-26 18:20

I called the owner asking what the buzzing noise was and he told me, it meant to motor was overheating.
And yes, 650 with installation, Im just shocked that they dont even bother testing.

Tbh, Id much rather deal with other mechanic than going back there.

mate the water pump is

Thu, 2012-04-26 19:37

mate the water pump is located in the lower leg/gearbox. Like tomcat says they probably never installed the water pump, needs replacing, or it was not installed properly when they did the gearbox.

Fkn cowboys shit me in the boating game, its not like a car you can get out and walk home, and like you say you pay these people top $ for piece of mind.

Jeez mate, sounds like you

Fri, 2012-04-27 21:48

Jeez mate, sounds like you had a shit of an experience with the wreckers, but you need to learn some fundamental things about outboards.

#1 Check the tell-tale at startup (& regularly when running) .........  you shouldn't have had to wait 2 mins for a buzzer to go off to notice there's no water going through it.

Check the water pump - you're either going to find a stuffed impellor.......... or possibly nothing in there at all

I'd also be checking the lower unit's oil level - and probably replace it.

Chances are they just bolted that leg off a stuffed engine, whacked it on a shelf and waited for you to come along - with no proper service or checks.

I hope for your sake the oil looks like oil ...... and not a milk-shake (which means the seals have leaked, letting water into the oil)

Unfortunately that's what happens when you deal with Hacks.

How old is the engine mate? I

Sat, 2012-05-05 20:06

How old is the engine mate? I would start with removing the lower unit and checking the water pump. You will find with the older force outboards the water pump housing will be alloy and they do have a problem with them corroding out on the inside where the rubber impeller runs,if so you will need to renew the housing and impeller, I would also check the copressions on both cylinders and make sure the head gasket is not blown as this will cause an over heat as well.

I hope you have some better luck boating.
