all above your budget

The Ryobi is $300. The SOL only goes to 3000 size spool and is also $300. The Exceller would be spent after a short while of jigging and or poppering. And dont forget you probably have another $50 - $100 to spend on line to spool it.

The obvious choice with your $300 budget (IMO) would be a 14000 Spheros with a few upgrades or a Saragosa 14000 if you can up the budget.

Spheros - $200

Upgrade parts - $40 (drag washers and a bearing race)

+ line.

The 3 reels you mentioned

The 3 reels you mentioned vary in size alot. What lb line you planning to run and whats the rod to suit??? That would narrow down your search a bit more.

saragosa

Wed, 2008-12-10 19:16

i'd go a saragosa if your gunna spend around that price. the ryobi is that great a real, the saragosa would beat it hands down. i had a play with the ryobi and the drag wasn't what i thought it'd be. and i've heard stories from guys jiggin for sambos raving about the saragosa.

Jigging reel for your

Wed, 2008-12-10 19:23

Jigging reel for your budget, i'd go the ryobi. If you are just going to put 20 or 30lb I'd go the sol 4000 (you could use it for light jigging, or driftbaiting). For GT's and sambo jigging you'd want heavier line.

Rods for 20lb or 30lb, have a look at the shimano SSX shorespin or nexave soutern spin. I have the latter and you could chuck up to around 50g poppers (flinging them nice and hard).

To be honest....if you want

Wed, 2008-12-10 19:29

To be honest....if you want to save money and want a shimano....get a Spheros. The Saragosa is pretty much an upgraded Spheros with 2 more bearings which is in the knob itself and a few more kg in drag. Cant say the Saragosa is a better reel than the Ryobi. The Safari is engineered in Japan years ago and was on the market for a brief period but back then they were retailing at $800+ Nowadays becoz of cheaper labour in China and Ryobi is now owned by somebody else, they can produce it cheaper. Dont see many ppl complaining about the Penn Applause which was a Jap Ryobi Applause for a number of years.

The Ryobi is designed for PE4-6 line and thus do not require any more than 12kg of drag. Dont forget 15kg of drag doesnt mean jack if the rest of the reel cannot handle it.

For 20-30lb I go either a Sol 4000 or the Capricorn J 4500 as well as the Sealine Bull 4500. Best thing to check out the reels in store and match them to the rod you want.

Spheros

Wed, 2008-12-10 20:11

I use a 1400 Spheros for jigging, Carbontex washes plus bearings changed, very happy with it running PE 6 86lb Ultra Castman YGK, I use it on the monster mesh for jigging, plus we use it for bottom bouncing too..( missus does) But I also have a spool for it with 30lb fireline that I use for poppers and spinning on my T curve bluewater..

You need to make it versitile when you don't want to spend big on a rig that you only use for one set up, make what ever you buy suit a couple of different senarios if you don't want to spend heaps.. MY2c...
