horsepower rating

I have a question relating to horsepower rating on a hull.

My hull is currently rated to 270hp - what criteria drives this rating ? is it actually the rated horsepower of the engine or is it the weight of a typical engine rated at that horsepower ?

What options exist if I want to exceed the hp rating without risking any insurance fallout

cheers

This will give you a rough idea how it is calculated.

Sometimes a marine engineer will re plate your boat with a higher rating for a fee.

HP Rating

Interesting if i worked that theory on my custom 23 ft i should only have 287 hp not 500 hp.One  hulls hp  is not the same as another Shape, Materials used, hull weights all play factors this is factored in by the builder and the designer if you exceed plate id horse power you void insurance go to the Boat builder or a marine engineer.

Yeah but

A 270hp fourstroke would weigh a lot more than a 270 2 stroke. Pretty sure it is weight and it wouldbe a  270 two stroke and whatever that weighs you could get the same weight fourstroke

Not really.

Max hp and engine weight are different issues.

The hp is totally irrelevant to max buoyancy rating and the OTM induced by the weight of the engine.

Buoyancy is only really taken

Sun, 2013-03-03 16:18

Buoyancy is only really taken in to account if the hull is to go in to survey for stability there are no major guidelines to boat building as yet hence why there are so many boats not up to quality standards. The only major one now is foam filling up to 5 metres from memory.

Cruise Control what brand, model, age hull are we refering to?

Whilst they don't examine the stability for rec boats, you can see it in lloyds of london reports for boats sold as rec boats.

The max weight is deducted from the max payload covered by the boats buoyancy rating, be that basic or level.

Its both weight and power. My Builders plate says 390kg which should cover the twin DF140 though also 270hp.

If I was you Id ring or email Kevin Nichols at Cruisecraft, you will find (if you havent already) that he is the most approachable big boss and freely gives of his time to help CC owners.

His personal 685 Explorer (identical hull to Outsider) has a single 300hp Yam, tested in Trailerboat mag last year.

He will be able to tell you if it could be done without insurance issues.

PM sent for some other info

For that rig I think you will have no problems. Give cruise craft a call and talk to them. Fair chance they will just send you a plate off the current hull that is rated to 300hp.
