How do you read Nav charts??

HI there! Im keen to learn how to read Nav charts. Would like to beable to find a place to go fishing on the chart, and then work out its bearings, put it into my gps...then go there.

Have trawled the net for info, but im sure they are making it harder than it has to be. Also what gear do you need rulers ect  Any help would be mint..cheers!

It's something that is really easy to show someone but very confusing to type. If I was heading out to a location pulled off a nautical chart I'd take a lat and long coordinate instead of a range and bearing. Much more accurate and you can still get there if you decide to stray off course. Get yourself a slide or parallel rule and a set of dividers, or if you are only going to do this occasionally a normal ruler will work ok.
Where you might get caught is you will be taking lat and long in a degrees/minutes/seconds format, where your GPS is probably set to display as degrees/ minutes then decimals of a minute. Might only be a small difference but could be enough to have you miss your spot. Easiest way is to get a GPS plotter for your boat. Second easiest is to go somewhere like Chart and Map Shop in Freo, buy the rulers etc and they will show you how. Otherwise do a course in Coastal Navigation. If you do the course you learn some good stuff like how to fix and navigate home if your GPS packs it in.
